An interesting addition to the ongoing saga, Chris
-- and I can see possible forthcoming plot-lines
stretching from here to the Promethean
Galaxy...
But the real question is, how would Bruce answer when asked, "Mrs Wayne isn't that terrible a concept, is it?" Because it seems to me that the ball is in his court -- which means that he can either hit it back... or he can take it back and, as long as he's there and not doing anything more important (yeah, right, like there is anything more important!), he can ask Selina what she thought that question meant. Of course, the mere act of asking kinda makes it a loaded question... and on past experience, when Bruce and Selina start their version of the Masochism Tango, a.k.a trying to work out what the other one is really thinking, as opposed to what they've just said -- whether or not the two are the same or not -- they could well end up in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, in front of an Elvis impersonator! Which might not be a bad thing... ----

Definitely did enjoy Knight Life - it was
interesting to just hear Bruce's POV for the whole story.
I cant' wait to see what you're cooking up for this
couple!
Somehow the set up for the proposal's coming together a little too quickly. How long have they been seeing each other anway? There's gotta be at least one more big conflict before they get to a proposal. I mean, what about both of their reputations?! |

You'd think he'd reach a point where he'd find an answer for that d---ed fly-trap. Then again, she's probably always making improvements of her own and . . . it's not an arms race, it's a plant race. Harley and Ivy work - each - other - up? Oh, wait, you meant something different, didn't you? And "Roddy McMurphy"? Nice homage. Actually, very nice story so far, overall (although when you changed the summary, for a minute I thought it was Chapter 21). Sincerely, Allaine |

Bruce is a very lucky man... | #5

...because he's managed to go through the whole
"Batman investigates what's in Selina's
head" without anything worse happening than
Selina being peeved at his attitude to the Siberian Tiger
(which, I have to say, I understand quite well
Hopefully, he's finally got it into his head that the simplest, most reliable method of finding out what he wants to know is to ask her, with a minimum of heming and hawing and dancing around the subject. Heck, if he wants one, I can even give him a starting script: "Selina, after the wedding, you sounded rather upset about being thought of as 'Mrs Wayne.' I have to admit that it unnerved me, too, just a little. So I thought about it for a while, and decided that it might be a good idea if we sat down and talked about it -- about us; where we are in this relationship, and where we see ourselves going in the future." Okay, that doesn't sound like Bruce, but it says what needs to be said in as simple a manner as possible, and I don't think that there's anything to which Selina could take objection. I could be wrong, of course... ----

Okay, that was cruel... And very Brucie-ish ( i.e. thick rich guy). Is he unconsciously paying Harvey back for the advice, way back when, about the Rules when dealing with Selina? On a more positive note, our favourite couple have (hopefully) sorted out their respective expectations for the near future, and Bruce even found out that he has a new friend -- Nirvana. Lotsa delightful one-liners: "the five-finger threshing machine" was one of the best. And the thought of Nutmeg as an alternative coin-weaning program for Harvey is LOL-stuff. Where can you go now? I can hardly wait to find out... ----

Chapter 5 -- Hmm... | #9 | ||
|
In the words of the great Henry Gibson, Ver-rr-rr-y
IN-ter-esting...
Food for thought in both "halves" of the story. Oh, and Dick's postcards were great -- though was it really wise to send the father of your new wife a postcard depicting "a haughty fashion model in a mini-dress"? You don't say, but I hope the model in question wasn't a red-head (unlikely, in those colours Meantime, Bruce has returned to his other not-particularly-secret ID of Hyper-Taciturn Man -- is this a reaction to opening up to Selina? Still, at least she continues to explore the nebulous boundaries of their relationship... but one does have to feel for Tim, caught between HTM and the inevitable reaction of an adolescent male when confronted with a woman of Selina's undeniable attributes in the process of demonstrating just how limber she is despite the D-cups. And then there's Dr Bartholomew and his patients... Considering what happened to the last such character you introduced (whatisname the Batman-is-an-urban-legend author), I'd be wary of selling this guy life or medical insurance...! Ah, well, lots more fun to look forward to, I hope. More, please, as soon as you can. ----

You've got a point there about Gordon's postcard,
Orion. I guess Dick is like me in this respect: go for
the joke and realize the consequences later. C'est la
vie.
As a pointless matter-of-interest, it was a last minute decision to make this KnightLife Chapter 5 and not SomethignElse Chapter 1. We're not finished with much of what was introduced in that first patrol of B's, so it could have gone either way. What made the decision? Well, FFnet had a spate of posts that pushed KL off the page so fast after the last update, that I was afraid a lot of readers missed Chapter 4 altogether. AND I like KNIGHTLIFE as a title and couldnt' come up with anything as snazzy for the next episode. Quote: Yeah, glad you mention that. Because outside of beer commercials and a very particular type of male-bonding fics, offering to do something nice does not, in my experience, bring out the warm and fuzzy in most men. Mostly it brings out that gruff: I'm gonna help you out and you say thanks and leave it at that and we don't have to hug or anything, just look at our feet and leave |

...to find something else to quarrel about!
But Dick does have a problem: how do you do the "night life" thing on a regular basis and hold down a regular job (with shift work, yet!) when you live a couple of hours away? I don't envy him trying. Frankly, what they really need is a Bludhaven version of the Clock-tower; it doesn't matter where Oracle is based, but Nightwing is going to have problems cleaning up the Haven as a long-distance commuter! And Babs could do with being taken down a peg; I'm all for self-assurance, but that "I outrank you in everything I do" bit is nothing but conceit. ISTR the Titans saving the world more than once. Meanwhile, Joker's fascination with "Brucie" is taking on greater and funnier proportions. How is he going to try to convince Selina that Bruce is Batman? (Rhetorical question -- I'm not sure I really want to know And then there's the DEMON guys; I wonder how long Ra's is going to use Ulcer and the Gotham "office" as a penal colony if this is what happens to transgressors. They claim that prison only teaches criminals how to better criminals; the "Old Man" So much in such a short chapter; more, more, more, please! ----

Re: Leave it to Babs 'n' Dick... | #13
|
Well now, reviews are starting on chapter 6 so I
think time to use this message board for it's truest
purpose and open up a dialogue -
Ghost, the focus of a story is an interesting thing, sometimes it's linear -like a speech they make you give in high school. I tell you what I'm gonna tell you, then I tell you, then I tell you what I told you. Sometimes it's a piece of music - introducing elements in the first movement and developing them with theme and variations throughout. And sometimes it's chess - you gotta begin by getting all the pieces off the back rank and into the fray, then midgame you move them around and see what happens. KnightLife is something a little different. It certainly began like music - that first patrol introduced a dozen elements some of which have played out and some which are only beginning to stir. With Chapter 5 we're moving into chess territory, getting pieces arranged. Will it work? I don't know. It's an experiment. Karanne - I've said it as clearly as I can, in character and out, you're on the wrong track if you think there's a Bruce-Selina wedding on the horizon. Not everyone follows the same path in this world, and that's not a path B & S are interested in at this juncture. Dick & Barb - like any real couple, they're making this up as they go along, and they're not always going to go about it the same way. Dick thinks like you - sure they might come back from the honeymoon and stay in Gotham for a month or so to catch their breaths, but they would certainly talk through permanent living arrangements. Barbara made an assumption based on the living arrangements prior to the wedding. Hence the conflict. It won't be the last one. As for "Selina letting Bats use the cuffs on the scarecrow," that's not her decision. You don't "let" Batman do things his way, you just don't. And she doesn't care. It was important Scarecrow bleed. He bled. After that her involvement in the episode was finished. CM & Facade - you got it. Joker logic is a thing unto itself. Like Earthquakes - you can't predict it, all you can do is brace yourself in a doorway. ORION! A Kiss on the mouth for you! As always, you pick up on the little things I think no one will notice the first time thru and follow them to their logical conclusion. There IS a WORLD of conceit in Babs's assumption - but she's not really an egomaniac is she? Not historically - something else at work there, I think. Only time will tell. "Joker's fascination with 'Brucie'...And then there's the DEMON guys" Indeed. And don't forget Tim's internship, Larraby Chemicals, and that other 'family' corporation buying up so much Gotham Real Estate. There's a lot of big business making its presence felt in Gotham all of a sudden. How DEMON fits in should be interesting to discover. How JOKER might get involved, I shudder to think about. |

Orion of New Genesis |
A recipe for mayhem... with hilarious consequences | #15
|
Ingredients:
[*] Joker, who plans to covince Selina that Bruce Wayne is really Batman by means of a convoluted death-trap involving the intervention of: [*] Ra's Al Ghul, who may blow the gaff on Joker as part of his own plan to "recruit" the Bat-family by setting up a rival to: [*] Oracle, who has just declared to her new husband that she and the people she works with/for are much more important than him or his friends and allies, and so he must put aside his ideas about the future in favour of hers. It is possible that this may be an expression of certain insecurities, which could well be aggravated by the appearance on the scene of Ra's rival information broker. If so, Babs may need the help and reassurance of: [*] Dick, her aforementioned husband, who, after his wife's harangue about how insignificant he is compared to her, leaves to think about their future, and runs into: [*] Tim, who has begun to notice and connect certain seemingly-unrelated facts which can be attributed to Ra's, and who may well decide to investigate them and any possible connections further, possibly in conjunction with his "bro" -- who is unlikely, at present, to enlist the aid of his wife, even though this could be something right up her alley. Of course, should the two Boy Wonders discover Ra's' involvement in either the insider trading or the new info-broker, they will, of course, promptly inform: [*] Bruce, who might find out about it (either it) anyway. But, regardless of how he finds out, he will immediately invoke DefCon 2 (or is it 4? [*] Selina, who is the target of Joker's scheme, courtesy of a misunderstanding on his part -- or the application of Joker-logic, whereby the combination of Cat-scratches and Bat-cuffs must indicate a split between "Brucie" and "Catty", rather than that Batman got to Scarecrow after Catwoman did -- but would she go after Crane in the first place if she'd dumped Bruce? Method: Take all the above ingredients and one very talented writer by the name of Chris, allow the latter to stir the former to her heart's content, light blue touch-paper and retire to a safe distance... and wait for the explosion(s)! When smoke has cleared, examine results, hopefully including: -- one large-ish life lesson for Babs (but not too horrible a one) -- another reason for Joker to check himself back into Arkham -- a chance for Dinah to laugh at Ra's -- Bruce and Selina continuing to get more comfortable with the changes in their lives, and -- assorted hilarity Roll on Chapter 8! ----
