Okay, the hat. There are two ways to look at it.
1) As a costume, you would want to present the image the public associates with the character rather than go for pure accuracy.
If, for example, Bruce took total leave of his senses and decided to go as, say, Batman, he would go for the deep blue store-bought costume with the yellow oval, instead of the black and gray version he knows to be more accurate.

Or, come to think of it, no he wouldn't. Not after that scarecrow-induced hallucination where he saw that Schumacher/Clooney nightmare. That would definitely turn him off going with the public's image. Oh well. That's Possibility 1. Then there's Possibility #

2) Chris had no idea Holmes didn't wear a dearstalker. *shrug*

Anyhoots, Loving the idea of the Jeremy Brett series as a Christmas Present. Excellent notion.
It was of course from Brett that I (and he) picked up that delightful Ee-ray-nah.


One last Holmesian point to ponder: You notice Bruce's fascination with the character predates Crime Alley. There's a very good reason for that, who knows? C'mon, some of you know these Tales better than I do.

Let me start the day by talking about myself, and MY PROCESS.

Seriously (yeah right), I would have to say 90% of the time I don't consciously choose the tone of a fic. I have this story idea and as I write, it has a tug in a certain direction.
Like a shopping cart with a bad wheel. And I let it lead where it wants as long as it stays in the pasta aisle while I pick up my noodles.


Now that's a blanket statement and there are always exceptions.

Sometimes the story idea does dictate the tone:
There was no way PLAN 9 FROM THE DEMONS HEAD could have been a drama any more than Hell Month would be a comedy. But it

One time the impetus for the story was the need for a change - but it was the other way around. I thought after FUN AND GAMES and PLAN 9 that maybe the rough-and-tumble bat-readers would be getting fed up with my less than bad-ass Bruce (okay, okay, now I know better, you guys LIKE my Bruce), so we had a round of angst for everybody and the return of Psycho-Bat in Satori.

I'm on a babble now, so I'll get the quick ones out of the way first.

Terri, I couldn't agree more. The ordinary day-to-day stuff, there's something strangely alive in it. More possabilities there than most characters ever get to explore.

Orion, You're amazing, you put them side by side. The Pre-Crisis Bruce, I remember him well, just like what you describe in Gotham Adventures - he was dark (Miller did NOT invent that). But that was not the only facet of his being, and that's why it worked.

I always found the "Bruce Wayne died that night" school of thought idiotic. It makes a nice soundbyte for a certain type of fan to parrot, but there are two whopping problems with it.

The problem with denying Bruce human feelings...

1) ...You can't have real drama without it.
A character who CANNOT do any particular thing always lowers the ceiling on how good any story can be. It may be extremely unlikely that, to pick a random example, Selina will one day overlook the years of slander and start reading the Gotham Post again, but it's not totally impossible.

2) ...You limit reader buyin
I'm not a fan of the space program. I was born just a little too late. I have only the dimmest recollection of seeing a moonlanding but wasn't old enough to realize it was unusual.
So that wild excitement some of my contemporaries feel isn't quite there.

Despite this, I LOVE the movie Apollo 13. I cannot sit through The Right Stuff.

The difference? The Right Stuff gives us demi-gods. Those guys are an ideal, myth rooted in the Wild West.
The problem is, if you're not a fan of the whole Mercury-Apollo thing, there isn't much of interest there. A Demi-god does something extraordinary, BIG WHOOP.

Now when human beings just like us, with the same highs and lows, strengths, vulnerabilities and fears as you and me does something extraordinary, THAT gives everybody a buy-in whether they have a special love of the subject or not.
Apollo 13 never once denied those characters their humanity. There were no demi-gods, they were flawed and they were real. And that's what made their triumphing over their circumstances a rush to watch.


So, in my world, Bruce has feelings and always will. It's that simple. Now admitting them, there we get into really delicious territory;

3) Bruce said it himself - in IDIOT and SATORI: He can't afford to deceive himself. To walk around telling yourself you're immune to human feelings is, in his life, extraordinarily dangerous.
Besides which, it shortchanges him on one of Batman's STRENGTHS. Not only does he need Bruce's emotions to BE Batman, Batman needs to have emotions in order to understand the other 8 million people in Gotham or he can't do his job.


It doesn't make as good a soundbyte as the "died that night" proclamation.
