To paraphrase his Shakespearean ruminations in Such an Idiot: the Batman is human, he's put together the same way as any other man. And we all know how Ivy is. Clark will not be around tho. To fellow Titans like Roy, yes indeed the sight of the Dickster in a kilt is cause for fun, but mocking a colleague's knees is what Mama Kent would have described as "not nice." Etty's rhymes have certainly attracted a lot of attention both here and in e-mail. Personally I never thought of myself as much of a poet, but in answer to my very kind e-mail correspondent: - watch the Kenneth Branagh Shakespeare movies (Much Ado about Nothing & Henry V are my faves) a few times - listen to as much Stephen Sondheim as you possibly can - ditto Rodgers & Hammerstein - relax & just do it |

Re: Bruce and Pam
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some parts come a little easier than others, obviously. Something I found invaluable (bizarre as this sounds) is the 1936 edition (yep, that part matters) of the Clement Wood Rhyming Dictionary. I heard about this when Sondheim did his Inside the Actors Studio interview. Lipton had asked if he used one, and he said Yes of course. In other words, there's no shame in it and it's pure affectation, in his opinion, these lyricists that look down their nose at them. Why the 1936 and only the 1936 of this particular dictionary - because it lists the words in vertical columns, not across. And so you can move your finger down the page and consider each one while still skimming pretty fast. Horizontal listings he said, your eye always skips ahead, since we're so used to reading right to left. And in my experience, that was true. I used a url dien gave me http://web.archive.org/web/20030928090306/http://www.rhymingzone.com/ a few times, but I found I was pretty much doing the skim-ahead thing. |

If Jason Blood did not like the Highlander, he is not likely to watch the show, is he? Unless Etrigan has some wierd TV habits? |

The Tylonol capsule bit had me rolling, Etty scortching the giant trees had me in stitches and "I'll get back to you" had me... some other cliched laughing metaphor... And Rob, I surmised that between you and Chris, eventually the entire octopus joke would be told... but it will just take several different pieces in many chapters for the whole thing to finally be told. You're right, it's taken on a life unto its own. |

Gothamite Posts: 40 (5/22/03 7:08 pm) Re: The Highlander -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well. Oh what a circus, oh what a show! A drunk Ivy? A moment please while I consider the possibilities. How will the queen of green spin this one? Harley Quinn and the bagpipes. You know, the moment I heard 'Bagpipes' I knew that *the joke* would be involved at some point. But Joker breaking up with her? Well. Harley's always been the one to do that. But now... Joker rarely keeps an idea in his head longer than a week, so by then he'll either be back together with her, or have the vague impression that Harley is evil, just like Brucie is wonderful. Jason gets the apartment? The rogues will now take great exception to this and either grit their teeth through it, or attack Jason, to get him out of the way. Etrigran's gonna be busy. On that score, does this mean that Jason blood and his other half are going to be a common character? If so, what's his status among the bat clan, or the rogues for that matter? I mean, Ivy, who hates him, and of course wanted the apartment herself is going to blow a gasket. Now, your small clip about the next episode. Seismic shocks. Are we re-visiting NML? And by the way, while I know the gist, I havent been ale to find overmuch in the way of details, and I'm a detail man. I like to know all the little things, 'cause thats where the story becomes great. If so, then does anybody know a site somewhere that can give me such information? So, a drunk Ivy, a bruised Harley, a scorned Joker, a demon from hell living locally, dissapointed rogues, seismic shocks on the way, and Selina's moving in. Put that all together and what do you get? Well... I'll get back to you. (Nice work Chris) |

Feat Of Clay Posts: 310 (5/23/03 9:16 am) Re: The Highlander -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Ivy, like another gorgeous redhead I have some familiarity with, seems to have a knack for having her plans destroy the very things she's trying to protect, and then blaming anybody but her for it. (Having met Galen, however, does this mean Harley will no longer be the only Rogue to spend a couple weeks with a charmer in Europe?) 2. Jason Blood - certainly not who I thought would get the apartment (although how did he know about Cassie/Vine?) 3. As for the surprise ending, I'll let Clayface say this one: I guess we can start imagining what Harley will look like when she's forty now. My character and I agree, however, that this was also a very funny story, Chris, with our favorite characters and continues a marvelous trend. Sincerely, Allaine |

Gothamite Posts: 777 (5/23/03 10:02 am) Re: The Highlander -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks guys! Stephen, interesting variety of questions as always. Yes Jason is indeed going to be a permanent fixture in Gotham, it's always been one of his favorite cities afterall. Just how often he'll be appearing in the Tales, only time will tell. his status among the bat clan is exactly what was stated in he fic. Bruce isn't crazy about him operating in Gotham, but he does owe the guy, and he does respect that Jason is more responsible than the flighty flashy self-important metas he stays in the JLA to keep an eye on. Jason's view of them: children, fussing about with their little games that have little to do with his long-term battle with evil. One on one, however, he likes and respects them more than he'd ever want to admit. The rogues reaction to this guy getting the apartment? Well we'll have to see about that too. I suspect once word gets out about how he shot down Ivy, there are those at the Iceberg who will be more inclined to worship him as a god. But if anybody did get any ideas, Jase is a powerful magic user in his own right and more than capable of taking care of himself. He's probably at Miriam's now getting the fixings for some kickass protection charms for his new abode. (Wonderful, says Miriam, now I can finally get that DVD player.) Seismic shockwaves was a figure of speech: it's the Joker-Harley breakup that is going to have far-reaching consequences, not a literal earthquake. But since you mention the Cataclysm and NML here is what happened: Few years back there was a MINOR Earthquake - NOTHING APPROACHING the devastation reported in the Gotham Post! It's just that Gothamites weren't really aware there was a faultline there at all, and so their reaction was a LITTLE drastic. Californians (the spandex-ones as well as the regular folks) had a lot of laughs at Gotham's expense over the whole thing. I mean seriously, if they're going to go all hysterical over - what - a 1.3? Now Gotham, like its realworld Manhattan counterpart, does throw around a bit of attitude, and the quake and their overreaction really picked that scab as far as the rest of the country was concerned. And politicians were quick to jump on the bandwagon. This lead to No Man's Land - a period which, again, the Gotham Post blew ENTIERLY OUT OF PROPORTION (as tabloids are known to do). What really happened was a few congressmen decided to score some points by saying Gotham should not receive any federal relief funds to repair damage from the quake. (Segue: these guys now claim they were under demonic influence - and the SCARY THING IS some yokels out there BELIEVE THEM!) The congressmen weren't SERIOUS, it was a stunt, but the GC Mayor had a hissyfit anyway (Segue: his marriage was breaking up in a very public and ugly manner and this making an issue of the quake-funding made a good distraction). Part of the mayor's response was to say that if the Feds so much as debated withholding funding, Gotham City would secede from the union and goodbye to the income tax from ALL THOSE MILLIONAIRES, BILLIONAIRES and CORPORATIONS. That was an intolerable thought and the Feds said they would install national guard troops...It turned into a pissing context that was simply too complicated for the typical POST reader to follow, so the Post "simplified" it by saying Gotham was declared a No Man's Land and feudal fifedoms were now in effect. This nonsense went on for a few months. Gothamites were mostly too sophisticated to buy into it much, but there are rubes in other parts of the country who actually think was a serious thing with the rivers being blockaded and the city being starved out. These are the fools Lex Luthor was able to take advantage of in order to get himself elected President. He positioned himself as a savior of Gotham or something. (An ad campaign which resulted in Bats breaking Joker's jaw, cracking two of Two-Face's ribs, and you don't want to know what he did to Croc). |

Gothamite Posts: 778 (5/23/03 10:06 am) Re: The Highlander -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Allaine, Jason Blood isn't just immortal, he is a magic user, and a very powerful one at that. As such he sees a great many things past, present and future, that are hidden to those of us grounded only in the non-magical plane. As a matter of interest, that useful skill of his (what Selina calls his second sight) doesn't seem to be universally used in the comics. But I picked it up from an Alan Moore Swamp Thing trade Dien recommended in which JB appears in the last two installments. I'll add my recommendation to hers, if you're looking for a yummy non-Bat comic. |

Tourist Posts: 7 (5/23/03 10:05 pm) Reply Look out for the trees... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another great job, Chris. The Highland games idea was very interesting and original. Personal experience or divine inspiration? I don't know much about Jason Blood/Entrigan, but you made him (them?) seem very compelling in the context of the story. Just curious though: How does Jason handle releasing Entrigan in the comics if he's so hard to control? Dick in a kilt + Wally with a digital camera = Maybe that reviewer from the last story was right: you do torture Dickie quite a bit So is Selina going to seek retribution for being bulldozed by one of Ivy's, er, subjects? It may not have been a personal attack, but she was knocked unconscious and had to be carried to safety! I would imagine that would be completely loathsome for someone as independent as Catwoman. Now that they've reached the point of no return by offering her apartment to someone, it'll be great to see the meeting of Alfred and les chats. So are Whiskers and Nutmeg going to have the run of the manor, or be confined to Selina's private rooms? Looking forward to the next installment Calico |

Personal experience or divine inspiration? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was wondering if anyone was going to ask that. Fact is, I do have an acquaintance that is an actual Scottish laird (not, alas, a rich bigshot like MacDonald, but every bit as proud of his heritage as Stephie's mom). Over the years, he's taken me to two of these festivals and two scotch tastings. Now then, enough about me. About the Dickster - okay I did have fun with the kilt, BUT balancing that: - I brought bridge & tunnel boy home to Gotham and out of that armpit Bludhaven - he had a wonderful honeymoon in Italy and - in the catverse he IS acknowledged by hero and villain alike as the finest piece of mantail in the DCU. That has to count for something doesn't it? |
