This is the first time I've tried reviewing as I
read, so bear with me if this gets a little
incoherent.
This Harriman's must be the gourmet store where Alfred and Anatole principally conduct their running feud. Haven't heard about that in a while, by the way. Have they declared a truce of sorts? I'm almost surprised Bruce allowed any flower arrangements at all... no, wait, every great house has them, and it would have looked odd for the Rich Fop Wayne to not have flowers in at least a few public rooms. So Bruce has bats reminding him of Two-Face and Riddler hovering about his workstation? Not that he'd ever admit what/who they remind him of... Ah, that does explain the sudden splurges. Poor Bruce; helplessness is an awful feeling. I'm not surprised that Ivy would visit Hawaii; frankly, I'm surprised she doesn't maintain a second home/lair there. So that's why she didn't go to the party; she fled to Hawaii to escape Catty's wrath, in case Selina found out who told that story to the Post! Poor Dr. Bartholomew. And I really mean that. ...hey, is that old Post story about the Arkham pshrink that went crackers after dealing with too many Rogues part of the Cat-Tales universe? ...I mean the guy pshrink, not Harley Quinn. Now there's irony for you! The Monarch of Menace is in a prison instead of an insane asylum, and he thinks it's unjust... when frankly, considering the way he's been portrayed in this series, he's never really been insane--not like Joker and the old Two-Face and the others who'd probably be in psych wards even if they weren't violent--and never belonged in Arkham at all! So Bruce helps himself feel better by helping Selina to help him. Well, hey, if they both feel better afterwards then it's a good thing. Mmm, isn't there a flaw in Ivy's reasoning about not using the pheromones aboard the aircraft? The only men who would come rushing up to serve her would be the ones who saw her there in First Class; the rest might be greened but they wouldn't have a focus for their behavior. Heck, they might turn all "yes dear, whatever you say dear" for their wives and girlfriends sitting right next to them. Which the other ladies might thank Ivy for, if they knew! Hmmm. Wonder what Hagen's doing, exactly... "Selina’s guffaws, snorts, and pfffts as she read the bulletins from the Museum Security Network grew gratifyingly frequent." Yeah, it's a wonderful feeling when you can get your loved one to laugh! What, does Bruce have a computer program that worms its way into airline databases on a regualr basis, and searches for keywords on passenger manifests? --Stupid question, of course he does. This is Batman. Um, this sentence needs a bit of fixing: "How long do think it is takes before this all blows up - into something green…” But the meaning is clear enough. All in all, great chapter! |

"Nightcap with Miss Selina's little friend
Nutmeg." I love Alfred. He's so - dry. I find
him hilarious. Incidentally, I just found out that
"Alfred" means "Counselled by
elves," or one guided by otherworldly wisdom. Do
people do research on these names before handing them
out?
Poor Barty. Poor, poor Barty. When Jonothan Crane can comment on your appearance without being hypoctritical, you have fallen far indeed. And it's going to get worse before it gets better. And he doesn't even know it. He thinks this is as bad as it gets, poor guy. "Gemprints?" "Walapang?" Where do you pick up this stuff? I've actually used some things I heard here for school essays, and it all turns out to be completely accurate and very well explained. I consider this series a source of information, and not just entertainment. Thank you for all your research. I love this setup. It's like watching a train crash - you know what's coming, and you can't look away. Whoo boy. Can't wait for what comes next. |

I don't know where Herself gets this info -- and I
agree, it's lovely stuff! -- but a fun resource you might
check at the library or book store is "The Howdunit Series". Dearly
Beloved's got several of the volumes as reference
material for his murder mysteries, and I frequently dig
through them for tabletop RPG plot ideas.
Right up here between our computers he's got Scene of the Crime, Police Procedural, Modus Operandi, Body Trauma<Murder One, and Deadly Doses. I've read through all of them at one time or another, and while the poison book (Deadly Doses) bored me, even that is something we both go back to regularly to fit a specific story need or plug a plothole. Which reminds me: I need to get him a replacement copy of Malicious Intent, as it got carried around so much that it fell apart.... |

Pammy's actions in this chapter took me by
surprise, because for the most part they were logical and
well thought out. (Based on her starting motivations and
abilities.) To be honest, that's not something we see
much of from her in these works. Getting out of town for
a while because Selina might be mad at something she had
done? Apparently she can be taught.

Heh, I liked the two bats. You'll have to do
something interesting with them when you get a chance.
Ivy seemed to be acting differently than she's been
presented in earlier chapters. Almost as if she was a
completely different person.

Hey all!
Highfive KimT, first review. You go girl! You’re quite right that we haven’t heard anything about the Alfred/Anatole feud since Polishing Silver. At that point, as described by Alfred, it had pretty much settled into uneventful mutual-wariness, kind of like the TNG-era Federation and Romulans around the neutral zone. You can assume if you haven’t heard anything, there haven’t been any developments, or at least none worth mentioning. Of course with a Frenchman involved, that could change at any time. Since I didn’t know about the Post story with an Arkham employee cracking up, I guess it hasn’t occurred in the catverse –so far. Of course with Joker around, that too could change at any time. The autodownloads have been discussed before, but not recently. Each night, the batcomputer pulls massive amounts of information from all kinds of corporate and government databases, analyzes and filters them according to a very specific query matrix Bruce developed and constantly tweaks in response to new criminals and other changes in the Gotham landscape. Just between us, Bruce is astonished at just how stubbornly predictable and downright dense his enemies remain. Despite all the updates he creates to hone the filtering, most of the triggers occur from items like this Pomona and Demeter, that date back to the earliest set of parameters. Hey Quinnce! Some writers do put considerable thought into names (Quint and Miss Jessel in Turn of the Screw, John Burden in All the King’s Men, etc.). As it’s a mark of truly “literary” writers, we tend not to see it very much in popular media (although Han Solo was certainly a loner). But it’s always nice to notice names, and being aware that they COULD mean something, give it a few moments thought. Writers insert all kinds of easter eggs like that, which reward really active thinking readers. So Kudos for even raising the subject. Now, the trivia. It sounds like a cop out to say I pick stuff up all over the place, like lint. But that’s pretty much the most accurate description. Walapang is something Dien mentioned to me in IM a couple months ago. I filed it in some dusty corner of my brain, and it jumped out here. I don’t know where I first learned about gemprints, it’s been quite a long time. But I was reminded recently when I saw a Law and Order rerun about blood diamonds. With the subject of diamond IDs fresh in my mind from that, I googled for details on the gem prints. Jarissa! Hi darling. I destroy books too. You should see my first copy of Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feyman. Deadpan, Yep, she can be taught-kinda. We saw in Fortune Cookies how she is biding her time on the Clayface/Harley situation because she (miracle of miracles) realized her impulsive acting out had a way of “not ending well” as the saying goes, bring on rampaging trees, berserkers, and Whitman samplers to name but a few. But then only a story later, she can get so drunk on her good press she brought about the very Cat-Upstaging she feared. All in all, I wouldn’t expect much in the way of material or lasting growth outside of a Pink Sapphire world. (Not so subtle reminder that Pammy is currently starring in her own Cat-Tales AU: Reap What You Sow, by Allaine. Highly recommended) |

good chappie so far, I wonder if Ivy will be making
a semi permemant move to Hawaii during those cold Gotham
winters now ....
Reading about Alfred is always a pleasure. Say do you think Ivy will want to tell Eddie all about her trip??? <- note the excessive uses of questions marks to attract the Riddler's attention. Speaking of Eddie i hope he doesn't read the post cause appearntly he's reformed and now working with batman to solve crimes. see the Gotham post under the title of DETECTIVE COMICS #822. Hmm... if Harvey has gone good and Eddie does too maybe they'll open their own detective agency, like old school gum shoe freelancers!.... oh wait only the Joker is crazy enough to talk like that |

The scenes in the batcave were neat, especially the
part about the 2 bats.
Out of curiosty, since Clayface will lose his shape if he tries to produce finger prints or retinas due to muscle strain (is that the best way to describe it?), how long can he hold a form under normal circumstances? |

How long can you clench a fist or hold a finger in
the air? It all depends on the shape, what else he's
doing, how he's feeling that day, if it looks like rain,
if the Knights won last night and he's feeling pretty
good, if a Tom Selleck rerun is on and he's feeling
pissed (he was up for Magnum P.I. and could have nailed
that part), and (figuratively) if he had his wheaties
this morning.

I adore the scenes with Alfred shopping. It's
educational on a sociological level and it makes perfect
sense. This is how things would get to Wayne Manor. The
shopkeepers might not recognize Bruce himself but the
Wayne butler is an important customer.
In a home like that, fresh flowers would be a normal part of the décor. The foyer would look wrong to Bruce if there were no flowers there. They’ve been there since before he was born. Just the ones on the dining table were close enough to his nose to trigger a sense memory of the funeral. Ouch! Now we’ll see if he’s healed enough to think of better associations when he smells flowers near his food. Eating with Selina present should help with that but then look who’s on her way home from Hawaii. Vacation’s over! I also loved the scene in the bat-cave. My, isn’t Selina in a playful mood. The security that you have to get around to sell a stolen diamond these days is fascinating and formidable. I also liked the distinction between crime fighting which Selina will not do and helping Batman with her criminal expertise which she will do. Great character insight! |

Apologies: I may be slightly out of my head just now. | #16
|
I think Susanah's got a good point there. To borrow
(and possibly mangle) a line from Lois Bujold: A fish
doesn't notice water. Flowers in certain spots are part
of the house, like a laundry hamper that never gets
completely full and a jug of milk always available in the
refrigerator. He'd notice if they were absent, but
noticing when they're present? Even a highly trained
detective would have trouble with that.
Now, granted, it might be best to use flowers with a very different natural scent for the dining room -- a fresh start, so to speak -- and definitely no lilies of any sort. |

Re: Cat-Tale 47: Blueprints | #17

Sorry for not reviewing earlier. I was away for a
while and haven't really had the chance to focus my mind
on the 'job'.
This is an interesting starting chapter. We are clearly getting only the set-up at this time. Whatever happens, I'm convinced it will be something to do with the Harley/Pammy/Matt relationship triangle. You see, I don't think that Hagen has a darstedly plan to escape. Chris has mentioned the problems he has in trying to maintain any one shape, and I think that he is loosing his cohesion. This means he is going to be shipped to Arkham in an airtight container, just in time to be on-site when Pammy breaks in to 'rescue' Harley. And we all know what Pammy thinks of Matt, don't we? I agree with Matt, by the way. Being a meta-criminal isn't an automatic symptom of madness but can you blame the Gotham DA's office for not taking the chance? Especially with a polymorph like Clayface. Bruce and Selina's little byplays are always worth the time and effort. Selina knows that Bruce is trying to get her help with The Mission, but I think that she appreciates that he is making the effort to be subtle. BenRG's Rating: 7/10 On the subject of the male psychiatrist driven crazy by Arkham... wasn't that the one who let Zzazz the slasher-killer into his head? - I think he was a nephew or cousin of the founder and sponsor of the asylum. He had Batman committed and eventually went nuts after Mistah J tied him up with a shotgun to his head that would go off if he relaxed even for a second. ~*~*~*~ They call me BenRG But... I don't know why... ~*~*~*~ |

My sister and I just returned from Kau'ai and I
must agree - it is definitely a place that Pammy would
love. Lush, verdant, filled with so much GREEN....and
VERY expensive. We walked by a real estate office, and if
I recall correctly, there was a 2/2 condo that was going
for half-a-million dollars. And that was the least
expensive place I saw. She'd need Lemon Pledge for
sure!
(And, since we upgraded to First Class on the way back, to change in LA, I guess that explains that wierd looking lady across the aisle....) |

Being good at something is extremely
attractive.
I get a kick out of Alfred’s ability to anticipate what Bruce or Selina will do. I get a kick out of Bruce’s ability to anticipate what the criminals of Gotham are most likely to do and adjust his nightly patrol. Bruce gets a huge kick out watching Selina revel in her own elegant expertise. I guess it was inevitable that I’d find myself liking Matt Hagen. He’s clearly good at something if he can outsmart his director to play a part the way he believes it should be. Now I have to worry about him! I hope Ivy falls on her face. (Sorry, Allaine but there it is.) By the way, I really enjoyed seeing these characters reveal themselves so well. Way to go Chris! |
