Huh. A one-shot. It's been a while since we had one
of those and it took me by surprise to see the next-story
blurb at the end.
On the one hand, I hope this isn't realy the end for Raven and the Doc. Their circumstances don't leave them with too many candidates for a significant other who can deal with their profesional lives. On the other hand, I can see how there would be way too many complications in their relationship if rouges are showing up on their dates or just pulling on them from both ends. Patient J, selective memory, and Psycho McHappypants. A both amusing and ominous ending there. |

Question is, when is Psycobat going to calm down?
Yup, I know he got ambushed by
Catwoman but
that does not mean he is back to trusting her. As for
Selina, seems she has some issues that she needs to sort
out... maybe a trip to see Dr Bart
As for Raven - it is not easy being her. Glad she had a good holiday, hope that the good doctor can figure out a way not to have his life ruled by Mr J. Talking about Mr J... I am not looking forward to when he finds out exactly who the Monarch of Menace actually was. Also, what is going to happen with Eddy and his inability to do anything now he knows who Batman is? Is this a chance for him to get back with Doris? Just some ponderings. Thanks for the taster, Chris - an aptly named tale. |

Spoilers Ahead.
Poor old Doc Bart. The guy just wants some companionship and Psycho McHappyPants has to spoil it all for him. Not to mention the fact that Harley is the new focus for him. Selina really should've known better, but I still think Bruce has no real right to be angry at her. Seems with every step forward they take, they take two back. But what truly terrifies me is this: "Bruce Wayne is with Selina Kyle. Claudia Reislweller-Muffington is dating Harvey Dent. Could it be the new society trend?" *shakes head* Absolutely no good can come from this. It's probably a sign of the apocalypse; the day Ra's Al Ghul graces the arm of Diane Warren-Merriweather is the day the Seven Headed Red Dragon rises from the east and devours the world. "Here's to
crime!"

Well well well - a Cat Tales one shot. And a very
enjoyable one it was too!
I think I've mentioned this before in a prior review, but one of the things I love about this series is the food. Many's the time I've been desperately tempted to fire off some paper copies of the story and cram them unceremoniously into my mouth in the vague hope that it will be as delicious as the words themselves. Another thing I love - the details. One such example, which probably won't mean anything to anyone other than me is as follows: "..:: Hey, ::.. came the (typically) informal greeting." The aside (in this case bracketed) is a deft touch, one that to my mind is the mark of good writing. It's the type of writing that won't hit you with a sledgehammer to make its point, writing that I strongly suggest is read slowly and carefully to get the most from it. Another example of details - the angry sex. Refined (and ultimately prudish) Englishman that I am, I wasn't quite sure how to react when I read about the heat that's generated during Spandex on Spandex action, or for that matter the roughness of Bruce's conquest. However, Catwoman's aside that she quite enjoys it occasionally reminded me that the writer is one who I can trust with my sensibilities - as usual, the Selina depiction seems to be spot on, the enjoyment of the somewhat violent act indicative of the depth of character she has. It would have been very easy to make a crass Feminist criticism in that passage, or perhaps even have a passive Selina blindly enjoying being dominated by the superior alpha male. But no. This is writing for grown-ups, and in that brief insight into Selina's mind the writer rises spectacularly above all such pedantery. Goodness me - a Veritable Parliament of Fowls present in this story! We had Penguins, Doves, Ravens, Cuckoos (and their nests). I don't know if this is intentional or not, but its very interesting that the supporting characters should be given Bird associations when the Protagonist is a Cat... Perhaps this says a lot about their relationships! (Look at me going all Dr. Bart...) And on the subject of Leland - don't give that man sympathy, give him a medal. Filling the hapless long suffering shoes left by Harvey Dent's recent apparent descent into happiness (I don't think it will last), the Doc is an excellent addition to the cast (in the sense of his being fleshed out more). As is Raven, a character I'm really beginning to like. I hope it works out for them - as with Sly, I really root for the 'Normals' and hope things go well for them. There was also a strong compliment of funny moments too. "Cobble-kwak-pot!" - That's a cheeky play on words, isn't it? All in all, I enjoyed this story a lot. The characterisation was very strong, and the nuance of the writing set it apart from much of the Batman-tripe you see on the internet - or in the Newstands for that matter. Good stuff. There is a wonderful sentence in
Augustine... "Do not despair: one of the thieves
was saved. Do not presume: one of the thieves was
damned." - Samuel Beckett.
All art is quite useless. - Oscar Wilde The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind. - Bob Dylan |

I have to say this is one of the most refreshing
plots in a while. No cosmic event, demension hoping or
magical dewhickies running a muck. Just pure good old
fashion "people" problems. Dr. B and
Raven just wow, and awesome pairing. I'm kinda sad that
Raven would just give up like that though.
Yes i know Joker is insane but really, he broke out of Arkham to go to Dr. Bart's house and then GO BACK there to make sure he got his session in. CRAZY!!! Poor Dr. B seems like he's on his final straw again. Oddly enough, the one question that kept popping up in my mind what... what's the kitchen staff like at the Iceberg? I mean these folk (i'm assuming folks) have to make meals for probably some of the most picky eaters in Gotham but instead of getting the food sent back it would probably end up in gun/sword/claw/viney thingy fight because the dressing wasn't put on the side. and... OH SHIT the new Black? Only rogue that i know that's semi sane(insane?) enough to go along with this trend would be Eddie... course it's been a long while since Doris maybe he should get back into the saddle so to speak. Keep up the awesome work |

Only Joker would break out of Arkham in order to
seek psychiatric help. I'm curios to see his action when
he finds out who the Monarch of Menace really is.
Hopefully Harley won't be anywhere near him when it
happens.
The Leland/Raven relationship is interesting, which is why it will be a shame to see it end so soon. |

Wow. this was just a breath of air after all of the
heaviness of the last few stories. Just light unfettered
insanity with no major world shaking implications...
beyond everything that actually happened.
I LOVED the Raven and Leland plot. and I DESPERATELY want more. I was waiting for some marvelously twisted plot contrivance that would force him to go to see her at the Iceberg and the chaos that would result. I still want that. </Labrador Puppy eyes> Bruce's control freak tendencies with the JLA were fabulous. and it really shows just how different Bruce has become. Pre-Cat he just would have chewed them out. Now he subtly humiliates...but allows the behavior to continue. Things really were going way too well for the Bat and Cat. *sigh* now Selina's having issues again. They really can't get a break. and frankly.... I've said it before I think.... but you write the Joker FAR too well. kudos. |

I loved the Barty/Raven relationship. I never would
have seen it coming, but it makes such pure, absolute
sense when you write it. But I also agree that it could
never work out.
One thing I've noticed through all the stories, something that you might not have meant to imply, is that the "costumes" on both sides of the fence screw up EVERYTHING. I mean, they mess up everyone they come in contact with, even the people that don't put on spandex and Kevlar and go out to commit or stop crimes. It's like their disfunctionality rubs off on the undeserving. And without the freaks even realizing it, the people they depend on to deal with the little things in life - like cooking and accounts - end up just as messed up. That's why it's so PERFECT that a normal relationship between two (relatively) normal people is ruined by the exact thing that brought them together. The same force that caused the relationship to blossom will, by it's own nature, never allow the relationship to last. Take away the thing that keeps the relationship from working and it never happened in the first place. I love paradox. |

On the subject of Joker finding out who the Monarch
of Menace was, there is a very good chance that it's not
going to happen. As in: someone might tell Jack what
happened, but that doesn't mean he's actually going to
listen. Harly has been telling him about it and in
response he's decided that HE is the Monarch of Menace.
He has this selective-subjective-reality thing going, and
there's a good chance he won't even remember that he was
ever separated from Harly the next time he breaks out of
Arkham.
Of course I'm talking about all this like these are independent people on their own tragectories and making their own decisions, rather than characters in Chris' head, but the fact I can't stop seeing them like this is a measure of Chris' craftsmanship. |

"Table for one."
LOL. Best - Joke - Ever. Leland and Raven was a cute pairing, but something tells me these two are going the way of Az and Helena. They already seem to be rationalizing the end of the relationship and painting each other in a generalized negative light, although one might HOPE that Leland might at least resolve after that final epiphany that "McHappyPants" can't be allowed to end things for them. On the other hand, he could just as easily rationalize his staying on the grounds that the Joker tends to gruesomely murder any replacement therapists. As for the Joker/Clayface showdown that some may envision, I don't think it's going to happen. I can't imagine why anyone other than Harley would bring the MoM up in front of Joker - it being entirely too possible that Joker will literally "shoot the messenger" before going off to wreak havoc. Although the first time Hagen runs into those two at the Iceberg, who knows? Selina's angst and the short lifespan of Gotham's newest couple (Ravland? Lelven?) aside, a lighthearted and funny romp of a one-shot. Bravo. Sincerely, Allaine Sincerely, Allaine |

Re: Amuse Bouche | #14 | ||

That was a nice way of decompressing from the angst
and tension of "Blueprints". It fits
well in the concept of your 'relaxing' stories - taking
us away from the main characters and their problems and
letting us look into the minds and hearts of the
secondaries.
Of course, this time you included Selina's own problems at Bruce's anger at being (temporarily) taken down by Ivy. I wonder if she might make some foolish choices. I also wonder if Bruce is in the right state of mind to stop her if she does... Well, I guess we'll find out in due time. Her "guilt trip" at attacking some random home was lovely. I especially liked her wondering if she was peripherally responsible for Bruce putting two idiot D-list Wannabe-Rogues into the ICU. Joker is always a terrifying presence and I find it thoroughly creepy how easy you get into his twisted cranimum, Chris. There is something pitiable about him though. A man with no past and precious little continuity to his thoughts or memories. One of these days, he is going to wake up convinced that he has and always will hate Harley and she won't last more than a few seconds. It is sad, but inevitable, I think. I do hope that Bart and Raven manage to find a middle path. Neither of them has the ideal career path, but being the only shrink that Jack will talk to must be worth some perks from the Gotham Board of Mental Health if not from NIMH itself. BenRG's Rating: 7/10 I look forward to seeing what "The New Black" brings to sight. Does every good playboy or playgirl need a Rogue on their arm? If so, what happens when all is left are the soggy end bits like Jervis and Scarecrow? PS: Sorry about not reviewing much for 'Blueprints'. Things have been tough IRL recently and I haven't been in the mood much. I hope that this will be the start of better things. ~*~*~*~ They call me BenRG But... I don't know why... ~*~*~*~ |

Re: Amuse Bouche | #15 | ||

Something I never (consciously) realized before,
that BenRG's comment sparked...
Within the constraints of Joker's fractured, fractal mindscape, he's actually rather brilliant. Sure, he'll wake up some Friday and decide, "Hey, I hate red licorice," and come up with some complicated plot to eradicate not only red licorice, but Batman as well (because everyone knows, it's all The Bat's fault, somehow Batman invented Red Licorice to taunt the Joker)... But within that framework of insanity, his "clever plan" will make blinding brilliant sense. Intuitive genius straitjacketed into the twisting confines of insanity. |

Re: Amuse Bouche | #16 | ||

I've always liked the little theory that says the
Joker isn't REALLY insane. he knows precisely what he's
doing at all times and just manages to play it insane. I
don't believe it for a second but I always thought it had
possibilities.
Although the twizzler thing made sense to me. actually I couldn't believe they'd ever even BEEN in the vending machine in the firsst place what with that whole lips and tongue logo. |

Poor Selina came so close. Naerly taking something
for the sole purpose of revenge?
Personally using skills that come with the mask for the sole purpose of claiming vengance on innocent people who had never heard of her in order to get revenge on someone who had wronged her and people she loved. Yes. NOW Selina is a Gotham Rogue. |

Re: Hm. | #18 | ||

If she'd gone ahead and succumbed to the
temptation, yes.
Poor Selina needs some way to creatively expunge the rage. Perhaps buying a greenhouse and deliberately shredding everything within until no piece remains large than a grain of sand, setting it on fire, sowing the ashes with salt, and paving it over with asphalt? |
