"hmm" indeed, that's me on the
reactions to this chapter so far. I would say that most
of you are on pretty solid ground, one of you is perhaps
making an assumption and/or not reading carefully enough,
and one or two of you have forgotten my previous
admonitions about sharing when you get your hands on the
really good drugs.

Thoughts on Eddie | #83 | ||
|
The fallout of this story is certainly going to
have something to do with the Riddler's
"episode". Going back over it, I think
he was telling the truth when it comes to not having a
"thing" for Selina in the romantic
sense. The problem, I think, is that Selina is the only
friend he has. The other members of the Iceberg crowd are
his peers and coworkers, but Selina is the only one he
sees as a near equal, in sophistication if not
IQ.
So his only friend is shacking up with his only true rival, and it's messing with both relationships. He's bored trying to match wits with Superman and he's lonely without Selina in town. He was already lonely in Gotham as hanging around Selina tended to result in a higher-degree of psycho-bat pummelings or being evicted from the Wayne estate by Superman. |

I got
it!
Eddie's trying to demonstrate that the woman is a more worthy adversary than the man, because he thinks the man doesn't notice it already. Lois turned out smarter than Superman, and Eddie wound up admiring (purely platonically!) her for it. So now he's showing that Selina is more likely to figure things out than Bruce, given the same opportunities to gather data. (Ergo, naturally, the women's way of handling things is also MUCH better than breaking somebody's freaking legs.) I think.... Wait, I might be jumping to conclusions again. Men are just impossible to really understand, sometimes. |

Wow! That email alert system you've got is
good! I got the email alert a good five minutes
before you posted on the forum!
Anyways, onto the story: Aww! Am I imagining things or is Eddie crushing on Selina? That 'incident' at the museum was a bit worrying though. SPOILER: Still, I'm sure that Selina enjoyed having Eddie spoil her. And their mutual reaction when Eddie wanted to know if he would be fighting Catwoman before this caper was done is a real lovely bit of character. Selina's reaction was in character but there was a subtext that showed how really badly that thought affected her. END SPOILER I did love Lois teasing Bruce. I wonder if it is part of the 'Fop' act or whether she just enjoys making Clark scowl. I have this strange mental image of Superman grunting and saying "Impossible woman!" This chapter really stands out for its exploration of the differing styles of Superman and Batman. This has been discussed in this topic at length by various reviewers and it now good to see the author addressing this matter in detail too. It is wrong, of course to say that either Superman or Batman are more "right" or "wrong" in their respective methodologies. In both cases, they simply have their own styles and have made them work as best as they can. Both styles have their own weaknesses (Batman has to rule by fear and Superman has to leave several possible vulnerabilities exposed) but they also have their own unique strengths. One of the noticable advantages of the "World's Finest" team-up is that they do tend to cover each other's blind spots and compensate for them. They also tend to see things that the other does not... much to their mutual discomfort. Just one side point: Is it me or is Clark determined to see if he can get Bruce to punch him today? At least three overt provocations that I can see so far and not even Smallville is that naieve. I have only one last point. I can't share Bruce's confidence in the strength of Eddie's ethics. He is strung out pretty badly at the moment and he seemed pretty desperate when he propostioned Selina early in the chapter. He is a desperate man, and desperate men (especially when they have mental disorders) don't always think things through carefully enough. He might get it in his head that by coercing Selina he is "saving her from being a good guy". I'm just hoping I'm wrong. Because Bruce would make him regret ever being born. And that is nothing compared to what Selina would do to him for breaking her heart in that manner. BenRG's Rating: 8/10 ~*~*~*~ They call me BenRG But... I don't know why... ~*~*~*~ |

Cat-Tales 51 | #89 | ||

While I've enjoyed reading them, this is my first
actual post to a story thread, so please forgive me if I
say too much!
I wanted to commend -- no, outright gush in thanks(!) to the wonderful Ms. Dee who has created so rich a universe it has become impossible for me to read anything else! Does anyone else find themselves running all other work through a cat-tales filter to measure quality? 2 years ago I moved to a new city where I didn't know a soul, and luckily for me I discovered Cat-Tales! It gave me something to look forward to and helped me get through a very difficult transition in my life. 2 years later everything is great, and I'm hooked on Cat-tales!! Ok, now I've finished embarrasing myself with the TMI, on to the story! I have to admire the mind that can write so many characters so expertly and keep them all unique and interesting to read. This chapter was rich with wonderful interaction between said characters, and I think brought more depth to some of my favourite relationships. I particulary enjoyed Eddie's day with Selina, and his realization that involving her in his latest plan may mean facing her on the opposite side. An unpleasant thought to say the least. You've got to love that long after discovering the "man behind the mask" Selina has not compromised herself in abandoning friendships despite Bruce's obvious distaste and disapproval. It was also great to see the relationship between Bruce/Batman and Clark/Superman explored again. I loved Bruce's musing that despite the physical pain involved, his interrogation methods were less painful than Clark's! All in all another great chapter in another very entertaining tale! p.s. Loved the hidden Cat-Tales wallpaper! |

Hmmm, I'm trying to figure out just what Eddie is
up to as well. The tigers certainly adds a twist to the
whole deal.
Loved the Selina/Eddie bonding time. They're so much fun together. And I was so eager to see just what Clark would pull now that he's realized he can get back at Bruce and Lois for their public flirtation. The comments about Selina's dress was a nice start. Great chapter! I'm looking forward to more! |

Um.... Superman DOES remember that Batman has a
kryptonite ring handy, right?
Ok, it's fun to see the Man of blue get some of his own back for Bruce Wayne flirting with Lois, but Superman better be careful not to over-do it. Anyway, great chapter, really enjoying this story. Now, let's see... Infinity + Wayne + Selina + Tigers Going with rings, it's possible we're dealing with some sort of cat's eyes stones. Or is there any area in Chicago/Metropolis that specializes in cats? Question: Looking up Chicago Loop in Wikipedia, I saw a reference to a 'Southern Loop' as well as the main loop. Are the two loop areas touching, such as to make a figure '8'... or an infinity sign, turned sideways? If so, what type of area is in the connecting region? Also, the term the Loop is apperently orriginally from a streetcar route. Streetcar = Er, rest cat.... This is something that might occur to the Riddler in his current state after the influence of the Metropolis Newspaper. I love the bit about Superman pointing out Nigma's crims being caused due to an injustice and Kypto's reaction to Batman. Of course, I have to wonder if Batman has tried to work out Kypto-Protocols, similiar to what he did with Cat Woman's cats... "Quick, Robin! Get the Kypto-Repellent Bat Spray!" |

Hi all, Pleased to see all the responses here. I
didn't know if anyone would notice a chapter going up
over the weekend.
Ben, Glad you like the newsletter alert! While it isn't always that fast, it's usually pretty darn efficient (Did I just say 'pretty darn efficient'? Must be Clark rubbing off.) Loved your take on the joint Selina/Eddie reaction to the thought of her trying to foil his crime. They are an adorable pair, and their code is all their own. >> the differing styles of Superman and Batman You've got to love them, don't you? I think it's the richest partnership/brotherhood in the DCU, personally, but it's suffered greatly from two equally damaging phenomena: I think it was Myklar who first noted the sad residue of Miller is that a lot of poor oafs were running around actually thinking "Batman scowls, Superman smiles, so they're opposites and enemies." Jeph's launch of Superman/Batman seems to have lifted much of that simpleminded idiocy. But I think the "BIG 3" emphasis that took over JLA did just as much damage. The new folks coming in who didn't know the old World's Finest tradition didn't think of Batman & Superman as a partnership, they thought them as 2/3 of this artificial marketing construct. Boy let's wordy, let me try again: >>In both cases, they simply have their own styles and have made them work as best as they can...One of the noticable advantages of the "World's Finest" team-up is that they do tend to cover each other's blind spots and compensate for them. Exactly. Superman and Batman working together are more than the sum of their parts. They become a new thing. Like words and music making a song, words and art making a comic panel. >>Is it me or is Clark determined to see if he can get Bruce to punch him today? Yes, but Bruce did a little provoking too. It's what brothers do. Breezygal, Welcome! I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy "meeting" a new reader, or technically I guess a long time reader. Silvertabby, Damn right! Hi Nodrog! >>Kypto's reaction to Batman Yeah I know. As if Catwoman wasn't enough of a hint, Krypto was the final clue for Bruce that he was a cat person and not a dog person. They never did find that utility belt he buried on Mt. Huascarán. |

Poor Poor Eddie. I thought it was pretty dam funny
the way Eddie GUSHED about how fast Bruce figured out the
clue... it was almost... Fanboish. Yes i know the lack of
mental stimuli in Metropolis daunting but with his first
taste of a real mental combatant and he turns to mush.
Well at least he's found some decent places to eat Eddie needs to find a watering hole in Metropolis cause, dam that man needs a drink and I'm not talking of the hot fudge variety. On a final note, wonder what dress Selina is wearing... for some BIZARRE reason it think it might actually tie into Eddie's next clue... |

Crimefighting through spa treatments =
okay.
Crimefighting through hot chocolate and fudge = does "not suck." Crimefighting leading to the suggestion that Catwoman might have to take Riddler down = SUCKS. Crimefighting uncovering spontaneous dances to celebrate how a superhero can solve Eddie's riddles within 15 minutes = PRICELESS! I really enjoyed seeing the intricacies of the relationships between Batman/Bruce and Superman/Clark and Selina and Eddie in tandem. Chris has clearly shown how Batman and Superman can have a synergistic relationship, both in her comments and in her lateset chapter. I loved seeing how the two of them methodically worked through the various clues and tidbits that have surfaced thus far in the investigation. In particular, Batman's musing on how they would use different tactics to "interrogate" Dr. Hamilton was spot-on (Clark, who knew you could be so sadistic!), as was Batman's interruption to stop wasting time. Another highlight in the Batman/Superman area was Batman's explanation of Riddler's modus operandi (Chris, I couldn't have described it better myself). The best teachers know their material and can find ways to teach it to others. Maybe Batman can add teacher to his repetoire of skills...assuming that Psychobat doesn't spoil everything with his monosyllabic barks and grunts. One last note: there have been times when I’ve contemplated that the “S” in Superman doesn’t stand for subtle or smart. Certainly the last few chapters have suggested otherwise. However, Superman gained a temporary reprieve from such thoughts in this chapter by picking up on various subtleties (Lois’s sudden tone shift with Bruce, picking up on Dr. Hamilton’s distress) and thoroughly understanding Batman’s explanation on Riddler, using Luthor as a comparison, to the point where he can paraphrase back what he heard. More importantly, I’m forced to consider the credence behind the idea that “S” stands for selfless after he asked Batman “Are you okay?” rather than “Why didn’t you talk to me?” That’s definitely something that Superman, or a true friend, would do. As for Selina and Eddie, it's no wonder they gel together so well. Both of them are quite intelligent, appreciate others with similar levels of intelligence (each other, Lois Lane), and have a certain disregard for caped metahumans and civilians who don't seem to exercise their grey matter. They also have similar viewpoints towards things like rules and the law. No wonder Eddie's trying to recruit her for some "practical socialism" (or at least reminisce about such times). I wish I could describe how much I marveled at their relationship(particularly after I devoted so much time to the Batman/Superman counterpart). All I can say is that their compatibility as friends clearly shows in the effortless and entirely natural conversation that Selina and Eddie engaged in. Oddly enough, both relationships also have a certain familial flair. The "provoking" that Bruce and Clark engaged in is just the sort of thing you might expect between two brothers (of a non-dysfunctional family, thank you very much :P). As for the banter between Selina and Eddie...it does resemble the sort of back-and-forth chatter between two siblings who know each other SO well. I'll conclude with the following thought: it occurs to me that a really cruel April Fools' Day joke to play on Selina would be to bring Krypto to the Mansion, sit back with some popcorn, and enjoy the show... |

Either way, it was, in fact, catworthy. And the idiots certainly had it coming. Up for two weeks, permits issued, and suddenly they're a dangerous, irresponsible stunt? Remember when Boston used to be known for having brains?
