I once drove through the Lincoln Tunnel three times
trying to find the Pennsylvania Hotel.
Is there something about those "metrosexual" photos of him in the Post? Because these days men are positively "flitting" about him. The subtitle of this story ought to be "Methinks the Riddler doth protest too much". He's spent the past two chapters trying WAY too hard to convince himself that this move is a good thing for him. But it's that one "Sigh", while he's lost near Greektown, that gets me. He's delusional, but he's not SO delusional that he can't begin to recognize that the "Metropolis is great, why didn't I move years ago?" spiel is starting to wear thin. One of the MANY ironies of his situation is that, for a man who obsesses over crafting and solving riddles, he's completely fixated on one he already solved. "Who is Batman?" He seriously needs to move on. (Even if it's "How do I kill Batman without ruining Selina's life?" Well, maybe not that, that one's as answerable as "Why is a raven like a writing desk?") At least Oswald's problem is - still my working assumption - external in nature. Whoever, whyever this OCD has been afflicted on him, it can be dealt with once the culprit is uncovered. Hopefully before he starts telling customers to lift their feet so he can vacuum underneath. Eddie, though - for someone who's always been relatively sane among Rogues, he is in desperate need of therapy. Especially when you're in a town where the Rogues are kinda creepy, the meals are too big, and pretty soon you're forgetting Selina's phone number. (Unless, of course, you run across it during a heist.) Seriously, Chris. Help the guy out Sincerely, Allaine P.S. Guess I should have said if I liked it, huh? Of course I did |

Allaine, I think you're the first to notice Eddie's
"sales pitch" - as for Toyman, well,
he's the sorts of Supe villain Eddie was likely to have
in his rolodex. Let's leave it at that.
Now then... Neeeeew chapter! Dumbing down and Ramping up now at FFnet and of course the Cat-Tales website. Meow everybody! |

Well, finally managed to work some sort of system
over here on this board.
Anywho, great chapter. I didn't get a chance to comment on Chapter 2, since I was on spring break and using another computer, but I have to say that I love the way this story is going. So much fun! You've really made Eddie into such a fun character. I can't help but laugh (and empathize) with his frustration. Superman has never been portrayed as the brightest crayon in the box. Granted, he's not an idiot, but riddles and clues just aren't necessarily his thing. I was cracking up about the take down of the mind-control rogues. Especially Tim and his "undercover fake-ID work". Perhaps it harks back to remembering the days when the cool clubs were all over 21, and I'd die to get into them, but I just couldn't help but laugh at the image of Tim being stared down by the Bat. Hate to be on the receiving end of that glare! Anyway, great job! I'm eager to see what Superman does when Lois clues him in on everything. And the fallout from Eddie moving to Metropolis once the news reaches Gotham! |

Bwa-ha-ha.... love it. Hilarious chapter,
especially Lois Lane's reaction. After a certain point, I
see Nygma just driving her home... especially after she
explains to Riddler that if he wants a hostage who will
go screaming to Superman for help, he really needs to
kidnap Jimmy Olsen instead.
Of course, I'm also picturing a scene where the Riddler managed to trap Superman temporarily in some sort of Kryptonian-Holding cell, and then promptly lectures Superman on needing to take better care of Lois Lane. I meen, if some extroardinarily foolish villian managed to kidnap Selina and kept her from escaping (probably have to resort to keeping her unconcious), Batman would be there before you had time to finish writing a ransom note. If you had time to feed her a meal, it just meens he's checking to make sure he can get everyone in your group in one go. |

poor poor Eddie.... one really shouldn't spill
their guts to a report that has an uncanny memory and
connections to the cap industry. Maybe he needs a
vacation... I hear Star City is nice this time of year
and at least Green Arrow... uh wears green. Oh wait
didn't Eddie visit there once? Ah yes the Post literally
"blew" it out of proportions...
something to do with a Nuke.
I don't know what Eddie's looking for but I hope he finds it. PS trying to woo the special lady of a cape that can "bench press planets" probably isn't the smartest thing to do. |

I find it interesting that Clark's reactions to the
clues are fairly inteligent and perfectly reasonable. Why
would he pick up the camera to "pan then
zoom" when he has a zoom function better than
the camera's built in to his eye? "Alien
Sol"? Here we go again with the red sunlight
emitters.
It's just that these reponses aren't what Eddie is expecting. The riddler is used to someone who can think outside the box and around corners like he can. Batman must be able to think that way because he doesn't have super powers and he has to anticipate the actions of people with non-linear thought processes. Superman deals with a lot of meglomaniacs, and his share of people obsessed with a theme, but encounters very few other types of insanity. Superman is capable of planning ahead, as seen with his preparations for a solar-based attack in this chapter, but there's no reason for him to learn to think "outside the box" when there isn't a box in existance that he can't look through or break open. As for M.O. and motivations, even Luthor is more straightforward than Eddie. Clark might be tracking better if he actually knew the Riddler was in town, but Eddie's expecting someone with a Super-computer scanning every bit of media and random data for key words and patterns. And Eddie being forced to confront his feelings about Selina... That's probably worse than any disaster he could get into with Big Blue. |

As the story becomes more wholly about the
characters and less about the city, there isn't as much
time spent on landmarks and such. The obvious exception
in Chapter 3 is Siegel Field. Siegel Field is, of course,
Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, with some
alterations. The big hand-operated scoreboard in center
field, of course:
And of course it'd make sense to have a Daily Planet Day there. Wrigley Field, and the Cubs, are owned by Tribune Media Corp, the same company that owns the Chicago Tribune. |

Hi all! I had to drop in and leave kudos for
Deadpan, that was a superb rundown on Superman's thinking
and "no reason to think 'outside the box' when
there isn't a box in existance that he can't look
through" is an ingenius way to phrase it.

Still plenty of local color to come, Nathan (I hope, anyway), but you got the big one in this chapter, natch. |

Scarred. For. Life.
There is a mental image in there that nobody in this world or any other needs, and I ain't talking Britney "I Look Like I Rent By The Hour" Spears. Poor Sly. That was an incident worthy of Harvey. Or Eddie, these days. Brilliant chapter, though. I can see Lois and Eddie getting along pretty well when Eddie's not being nuts. He likes smart women who can cut through the BS, and Lois excels at that. And Lois can at least appreciate Eddie's intelligence and the fact that he's not a murderous psychopath. |

Poor Eddie - half of his problem is that Superman
is used to dealing with... super threats. And the bigger
half of his problem is that Superman doesn't realize
Eddie's moved into Metropolis.
Perhaps someone more familiar with the early DC-verse can tell me, did Riddler 'announce' himself, including his Name, when he started up against Bats? Loved the take-downs of the MC3 - Scarecrow during a caper, Hugo while setting up a caper (the grand finale's setup, anyway), Jervis was just setting up a hide-out, I think? Poor Jervis, he got a worse takedown than Hugo Strange. Honestly, Jervis, you've got to be more aggressive when Hugo Strange gets further along in a caper than you! ..... Fascinating. I just realized that Jervis, had he set up the Rabbit Hole without control chips... would have been respectable. Indeed, verging on competition for Oswald. Poor Jervis! |

Right now I'm picturing Edward driving Lois home,
Lois inviting him in for a cup of tea... (He was having a
really bad day.... I couldn't imagine just sending him
away, it would have been like kicking a puppy... he's the
nicest kidnapper I ever had) and then Nigma meeting Clark
Kent when Calrk finally comes hom.
That's going to be a surreal experience for Clark... I see Eddie being a fan, and Clark having to deal with that without letting slip he's met Eddie before. And then if Eddie starts complaining about his latest attempts at run ins with Superman.... danvighar: based on the stories so far, Riddler was already announcing his crimes in riddle form before he met Batman. Batman just inspired him to make his riddles more complex and interesting, perhaps turning a minor criminal bit of nose-thumbing into a full blown intellectual obsession. |

After the intense scene at the end of 001, Bruce
and Selina has obviously reached another plateau in their
relationship. With Bruce being reminded about the early
days, it seems as though they're back to this question of
unpredictability and dealing with this next step in their
relationship. While it may have previously been questions
of stealing, independence, commitment, and reputation,
the fallout after such a personal scene brings Bruce to
the question,
“What if they really were stuck with a story too big and inescapable to not report, one that absolutely contradicted their crimefighting gogglewhore?" While Bruce nor Selina can deceive themselves by hiding this behind questions of stealing, perhaps this has forced Selina to once again look into who she really is and what Catwoman represents. After seeing Bruce come to peace with his past and the death of his parents, maybe Selina is trying to do the same. I think this goes beyond stealing, her reputation, and The Post. Or perhaps Selina just simply wants to have a little fun. Whatever it is, it's going to get interesting once word about Eddie's move to Metropolis and his recent confession comes round to Gotham. Poor Eddie. It seems as though he can't catch a break. Better yet, I feel sorry for the crew at the Iceberg. Nobody, especially Sly, deserves that. |

Oh, Eddie, you poor, poor bastard!
On the other hand, I'm looking forward to the moment when he looks Superman dead in the eye and scoffs, "You are not worthy of the great Lois Lane!" ... Holy crap. Lois just got one of the best reliable contacts into the criminal underworld that a reporter could want. All she has to do is leave Eddie some portion of his dignity. |

Speaking of poor bastards, looks like Sly's found a
new occupational hazard at the Iceberg.
*shudder*
It's funny how the efforts of the MC3 to inject new life and innovation into their criminal activities were foiled before they really had a chance to get anywhere. Question: why are Eddie's riddles not working? Answer (possible): They're geared for a dumbed-down Batman, not Superman. This isn't a case of Superman being too stupid. His response to the riddle covered multiple possibilities (mundane and otherwise) in a logical fashion, given the kind of enemies he normally goes up against. Unfortunately, Riddler doesn't fall in that category. Furthermore, Superman doesn't fall into the category of superheroes that Eddie's accustomed to. All the frustration that Eddie's feeling right now is compounded by the fact that he never completely addressed how much the revelation of Batman's secret identity (and Selina's relationship) changed the ball game. Instead, he ran off (granted, having two broken legs didn't help) to Metropolis and pretended that it was a dream city for him. All that tension was just building and building. Lois's comments was the SALTY CAT for what might be politely termed as an "episode." I'm looking forward to more Eddie-Lois interactions. If I may expand on Jarissa's comments, this potential relationship could provide some interesting insights into the worlds of (legitimate) investigative journalism and criminal undertakings, respectively. Plus, the inevitable showdown between Eddie and Clark (or Superman. Or both) promises to be very interesting. One last thing: Killer Croc and Britney...is there anyone else who started chuckling before having a minor (or major) urge to scrub your brain? |

Hi, all! I have always assumed that Metropolis was
based on hey-day Cleveland... but we have Spidey on our
streets now, so I guess Chicago can have the
spitcurl.
Anyway, I just finished reading a wonderful non-fic about Chicago: Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City, focusing on Chicago's architects/architecture, the 1893 World Columbian Exhibition, and a very nasty mass-murderer who could probably give Joker a good run. Then I logged in here to check and found all this great Chicago "color" in chapters 2 & 3... great stuff! I'm loving Eddie in this story... I've seen people fanatically try to rationalize a major decision they now regret, and they sound just like this... love the SNAP with Lois... seen it, done it, so real... and perfectly pitched for a high-strung, lovesick genius who can't find a playmate... |

Okay, coming in a bit late again, thanks to
FF.net's late alerts (if they alert at all!
Anyway, on to the story. Poor Eddie! It is such a pain, not to get the press or the attention that you feel you deserve, isn't it? As I and the others have warned you though, Metropolis isn't the town for a grand game of chess. If you want to tangle with Big Blue, you must be more... er... direct? Poor Selina obviously has never had to deal with Bruce when he is in the mood to trump a villain's plans (mostly because she is a thief, not a "let's create a scheme to take over the world" type). Selina and Bruce on the roof, BTW, was a lovely little bit of decompression. You see both sides of the couple in this story. Most importantly, you see how Selina and Bruce are integrated with Catwoman and Batman. One question remains: Exactly what "fun" does Selina want? I see that Bruce has his own preferred therapy method - Put the Rogue in traction. It was a nice idea, Scarecrow, but you should know by now that the Bat is always three steps ahead. Great little action snippit, Chris. I see that Dick is enjoying him too. Well, Bruce needs to concentrate on the Alphas. I'm sure Dick doesn't mind dealing with the rejects and no-hopers. Quote: MY EYES! MY EYES! OH THE HUMANITY!!! *Runs across hall in fit of hysterical blindness and crashes straight into far wall.* Wow! Well done Eddie! A great little way to let Superman know that you are in town. Of course, it is also pretty likely that this will make Clark let Bruce know you are in town but, hey, c'est la guerre, right? And... do my eyes decieve me? No! It's true! He still doesn't get it! Picture puzzle plus anagram is still to tough for Clark to untangle! You know... Eddie really is obsessing about Selina, isn't he? And, of course, it would be Lois that made him break. Oh, so funny... so funny... "That was off the record". Indeed And so, with one bound, she was free! Clark is so going to get it when he gets home. Chris, this was an undemanding chapter, but the character moments make it all worth it. I loved Eddie's ongoing nervous breakdown and I loved the Bruce-and-Selina interaction. You have got me hooked! BenRG's Rating: 7/10 ~*~*~*~ They call me BenRG But... I don't know why... ~*~*~*~ |
