Well, he had me fooled, but I guess that's why I don't get the job as 'The World's Greatest Detective'... or his better half. I have to
kick myself in retrospect as Tim was right about the key clue and I know enough about these things to know better. Well done, Chris, for fooling me.
Poor Selina - Welcome to Aquaman's world, Kitten. A world where you can travel by shark-surfing and whales carry sonic cannon and troop insertion pods. Still, at least she's okay, if bedraggled (and there is nothing guaranteed to leave a cat desperately trying to hoist up its dignity quite like being wet This was a very good, if shorter chapter that focused on the 'white' side of the board getting their pieces in place. It looks like the big showdown is only a two chapters away at most and it will be a fairly major production with the entire armed forces of Atlantis about to lay on the whupass. However, I still think that Tim is the joker in the pack (no offence intended). After all, Ra's doesn't know he is there and this might turn out to be a critical weapon in the heroes' arsenal. Well done for providing an interesting, challenging and creative story, Chris. It's these little red herrings and character details that keeps a reader coming back again and again. If the reader is involved in the story too, then you are sure of your audience. BenRG's Rating: 8.5/10 P.S.: I love the character of Valerina. Her 'outsiders' view of Batman and Aquaman's relationship is wonderful as is her perception of the world of government and diplomacy. It is interesting that she should see Batman as being similar to a visiting general or ambassador because (and I think that Alfred and, ironically, Ra's are the only other ones to explicity state this), Bruce is a prince of the modern world, with many of the powers and responsibilities of a medieval monarch. And, like such a man, he makes it his personal business to defend his kingdom. ("Grunt") ~*~*~*~

I dont know if I agree with you on certain specifics there Ben....
It seems that if anyone would know just what was really used on the Sci types it would be 'Him'. And personally I think the 'He's Here' refers to being seen not only on whatever that Island was called, but specifically in Pete's. However, let us recall that way back at the start the Hairdo issued orders to prep one of his more inaccessable lairs. Its possible 'He' is here because its the closest resupply point? This one shows all the signs of being the most dangerous yet... he's smart, and uses his initiative, and doesnt worry about the usual end to his position. If any of them are capable of being proactive to help the plans move forward, its this one. Hear that thunder rolling till it seems to split the sky?

That, and the fact that Ubu's a fanatic. A fanatic may not like being a fish, but his Master's voice commands seafood...
Quote: And after that, a splash, a gurgle, and at least I knew for sure that I had not become a water-breather. EndQuote If I was an evil overlord Rule 1: My Legions of Terror will have helmets with clear plexiglass visors, not face-concealing ones. Seriously, rule number one. Rule 103: All members of my Legions of Terror will have professionally tailored uniforms. If the hero knocks a soldier unconscious and steals the uniform, the poor fit will give him away. Ra's plan, at least what was visible in Chapter One, was misdirection for the Detective. Give him a mystery. But the wildcard is either Selina, who is supposed to be dead, Tim, who is supposed to be in Gotham, or Arthur. You don't hunt a snake in tall grass, you don't hunt Batman in the dark, and you don't challenge Aquaman Underwater. You just don't. Fighting two superheroes is bad. Throw in an army of Hammerheads, and that changes the math more than us surface dwellers might think. And if the fish-morph is a bluff for the rest of the hostages, what is Ra's doing? |

I liked the part where Orin had to tell Vulko that there was a time and place for pomp and protocol, and this was definitely NOT the time or place.
The best part has to be the introduction of all these "servant/underling" characters, for lack of a better descriptor, and their perspective on the heroes and villains that they associate with. To be frank, I've been more interested in the newbies like Valerina and Ubu (well, we've met the latter before, but he's new in the sense that we're getting more out of him than the old bodyguard/head of minions vibe) than anyone else, a fine testament to Chris's skill. This has definitely been an enjoyable Cat-Tales, and the fun shows no sign of stopping. |

Question two is indeed "what is Ubu doing in the bar?" Question one is "what happened to everyone garrisoning/staffing/taking tickets at this
fortress turned vacation spot?"
And Tim just keeps digging his geek hole deeper. :D Chris my congratulations in making a place that is usually deadly dull in to a marvelous place to visit and for your continuing presentation of Arthur as a true leader and geopolitical heavy weight, despite the inherent ridiculousness of a sitting monarch playing superhero.

Chapter 8: Kobayashi Maru
And yeah, it's a bit short, but with no graphic novel or book compilation in the background, it won't be nearly as long a wait for chapter 9, I promise!

"I don't believe in the no-win scenario Okay, that's a Kirk quote, not a Bat quote, but you know Bruce has hammered something similar into the kids head somewhere along the line. It was short but sweet. It gets us to the jumping off point of the climax, IMHO. We know the problem and we know the bigger problem. The question to answer is what are the heroes going to do about it? I strongly suspect that, for now, Tim & his able sidekick's part is going to basically be hiding and keeping out of the DEMON goons way. However, something tells me that the doc will want to be running around and breaking stuff. Not a Bat-recommended strategy but Tim is going to have a serious problem dissuading her without explaining his qualifiction for doing so. Quoth King Orin Yeah, preach it brother. I just hope that they do before someone throws said pointy stick. The only phrase that comes to my mind is: "If you go to Zha'ha'dum... you will die." BenRG's Rating: 8/10 ~*~*~*~

As I'm not a cat, I think it's perfectly understandable that, after the release of (part of) a new graphic novel AND the compilation for Book 4, the
chapter's a bit shorter than normal. Of course, I'm sure Whiskers and Nutmeg would be the first to point out that I am a simple two-foot!
And then there's Ubu. He met with Catwoman, and now he's back. What did they discuss? Is he back to enact his part in some scheme to save Ra's from himself, or is he going to blab to his boss? Does Batman and Aquaman know? It might be tricky, but if anyone can pull this Kobiyashi Maru off, they can. Looking forward to Chapter 9! |

I'm going to burnish my own Geek Cred with a quote from Lord Auditor Miles Vorkosigan. "From the outside most people can't tell the rapid
exploitation of a belatedly recognized opportunity from deep-laid planning."
One of the things I always enjoyed about ST, especially TNG, was that facility with which every one played along with a plan in a crisis when all they had to go on was the suspicion that someone had a plan. Looks like Dr. Medows is a Geek Jock as well as a Hot Scientist. This may or may not simplify Tim's life.

Dr Meadows just became too good to be true. A super-brain, and a geek, and a Black Belt? Either we're setting Tim up for a 'Ahh, we're great
together if only you were taller' sort of fall, or Dr Meadows is gonna be the next Robin. I already checked EJ Meadows through my memory of Cat-Tales
Henchmen, plus a few anagrams. 'Jade's Meow' is what I came up with. Maybe that's significant, maybe not.
I love being surrounded by geeks. It's all the standardized education we give ourselves. Put any group of geeks in a room from any nation, economy, religion or gender, and the words are immediately understood by them all. An obscure Seven of Nine reference is a gameplan, the term 'Kobayashi Maru' is a situation report. I think Ra's Gameplan is a Crown-Hit. Send Arthur down the trench to be devoured by his boogeymen, leaving 70% of the globe looking for a King, and put Batman in the one place he's at his weakest. Underwater. The one question I have, is whether Talia's bout of impromptu evolution with Greg means that Ra's closed the book on Batman as his son-in-law to be. If he's decided that plan's no-go then Batman is at a tactical disadvantage. The other's aren't wrong though. The deciding factor is: What happened between Ubu arriving at the coast in the last chapter, and getting here in this one? |

Jade Meow? Stephan, that's probably Eddie's best/worst nightmare/dream made real. Smart? (check), Semi obsessive compulsive behavior? (check, she's
totally got her head stuck in that Atlantian machine now), HAWT? (double check), Has an Anagram in her name that is one of Eddie's long time desires
(Selina you'd really look good in green)
Only bad thing though... What's worse than Batman breaking both your legs? Robin breaking both your legs ;) |

Chapter 9 - Trading Pieces | #76 | ||
|
Now, that is more than worth the wait and the shorter chapter last time!
Something tells me that he is in for a rude awakening. The only question is just how bad will have things gotten in Ra's base before Bruce and Selina arrive to deliver the coup de grace? I have to agree with Bruce that it is the only way to stop a bloodbath and massively increases the chances of rescuing all the hostages intact. This is a nice little story, Chris. I'm enjoying you using Arthur instead of Clark in a team-up. He has his own unique way of doing things. I'm looking forward to the climax, which I suspect is only a chapter or two away at the most. I don't know if this has ever been in the comics or not, but I would, at some point, LOVE to see your take on Bruce introducing Selina to Clark. And
letting her know who he really is. Along with introducing her to the rest of the family. By the time of the wedding, she knows everyone's name, so she
must have been introduced to the key players.

That is a fantastic idea, tm (and welcome, btw). There are a lot of untold stories from that Book 1 period, and I should figure out a way to explore them.
Thanks for the nudge.
Everyone else, I feel bad that I'm not responding to your feedback as regularly as I used to... or, y'know, at all. I do hope to return to the old online presence at some point. Right now, offline life is carrying on like needy child and it's just not letting me have 2 minutes for the online sibling. Grrr. Good news is that the time I do have goes to the writing, and the chapter is nearly finished. |

Now there's this little voice in my head whispering EJ Meadows is Cheshire... EJ Meadows is Cheshire. |
