Here's the abstract for an independent study that I'm working on this semester. I'm starting on the serious work on this right now, and when I finish it fully and get it edited I'll post the full thing. The claim that superheroes represent a form of modern mythology is one of, if not the, most common statements amongst fans to defend their love of superheroes. It is also one that the first half of my paper will set out to prove erroneous by showing how mythological stories must be inherently religious and showing that though superheroes outwardly resemble gods, they are not such because they lack a faithful religious following. This is not to say that superheroes play an insignificant role in the culture of America. Indeed, from the disproving of the idea of the superhero as mythology, the paper will then go on to suggest that a presence that has so deeply embedded itself into the American subconscious should instead be viewed as part of America's folklore.

Damon Runyon once said, "Ninety-five percent of sports tradition is fiction. Lies, if you like. But harmless. Who the hell cares if the facts get twisted?"
