The quote from the end of Armchair Detective went something like "Long before the Gotham Post's nonsense became an issue, when you had nothing to
prove about a lying tabloid saying you were something that you're not, you… fought crime. Rather well. And offered to do it again."

Great chapter. Bruce can make her fight crime, but she'll do it her way.

twisted?"

Send home the judges, we have a winner. The most number of ways you can justify doing a complete 180 on your life choices at the request of somebody else and
still explain to an outside observer that it's all your way, all your choice, all your plan.
It's all a question of who chooses this moment to be a bad guy. If it's Ivy or Scarecrow, then Selina has no problem. If it's Clayface or Harvey, then she has her ways. Ways Batman won't have. If it's Joker, then this is scary all of a sudden. If it's Eddie, then this is going to be interesting. I'm voting for Eddie, for just that reason, or Joker, simply because we haven't seen him since The Dark Knight, and I think we all wanna know what Chris is gonna do with him. |

Before I start, let me be the first to welcome the latest "de-lurker" who's emerged from the shadows of the Internet.
I'm wondering whether Batman's going to edit Catwoman's duty logs into a more "acceptable" format. On the one hand, it definitely doesn't follow SOP (standard operating procedure). On the other hand, there's no denying that it was written from Catwoman's perspective. As we all remember, it was that perspective that ultimately cracked the case in Armchair Detective. As stephensmat2 pointed out, Catwoman's defined herself (in the loosest possible sense of the word) by whatever she chooses to be, and that applies to her newest extracurricular activity. She's choosing her patrol route (with some "suggestions"), who she'll pummel, why she'd like to chastise them, and how she'll bring on the pain. It's kind of funny to see her take on "Not In My City!" It's tempting to question whether Batman was honestly impressed by Catwoman's First Night as a Superheroine. By his standards, the night's "haul" doesn't seem to measure up unless you take into account the "first-timer" factor. On the other hand, he's become increasingly less Psychobat over the years, and have embraced a greater degree of honesty and appreciation for the various people in his life (particularly in Armchair). Furthermore, the rest of Team Bat is still out and about, and it's not as if there's a mass exodus from Uncle Jerry's House o' Fun. So, all things considered, Batman may truly be satisfied. So is Catwoman, for that matter. She didn't manage to find Pammy and knock her on her leafy ass, but she did manage to make some amateurs piss their collective pants. As long as she can find bits of fun like that, she'll be okay with this crimefighting thing. The rest of Team Bat, however... well, we'll have to wait and see, won't we? |

RE makes a point. I don't think Batgirl knew quite what to make of Selina at any step of this series. Last five or six stories, she's been getting some
advice and friendship from Ms Kyle, but now suddenly Batgirl's in her element. If they interact, it'll be hard for Selina to justify her new patrol
route compared to Cass and Tim's.

Chapter 1 review | #12 | ||

Okay, first I owe you an apology for a late read and review, especially given how much I've been looking forward to this story. I've been
having one or two minor technical problems which I hope are now resolved.
For a start, I have to again tell you Chris, that I love your characterisations - especially Selina. She has a superb and enviable talent to self-rationalise to help her do what she subconsciously knows to be right and necessary without violating her conscious need to be an independent bad girl. That is a skill that I would love to have myself; it would save me a lot of interpersonal collisions. You know something... if Pammy was smart (and no one has ever accused her of that) she would have worked out that there would be consequences of beating on the Bat and got out of town (maybe to settle for a while in the grounds of the sanitorium where Harvey is having his brain de-pickled). However, instead she has chosen to remain around and wait for Selina to call. I can only assume that this is more of that 'goddess' ego trip thing that has served her so ill in the past. I suddenly realised that this whole thing is Catwoman's patrol log for the evening. I have this lovely image of Bruce getting redder and redder as he reads on, not sure whether he should shout at Selina or hug her for a job well done. She is an impossible woman... but she is his impossible woman and I think he has come to love her unique eccentricities. I loved Selina's little comment to the fashion designer, BTW - slightly more wordy than an anonymous email from Batman but it gets the job done and lets Ms. von Furstenberg know to whom she owes a favour, should the need ever come. I strongly suspect that those two z-list arsonists are probably going to be having cat-themed nightmares for months. This is a slow start overall, but I can't really complain. Your characterisation is faultless and you have a skill to make stories grow or even jump out of the undergrowth without tipping anyone off in advance. It is nearly impossible to guess where this will go later, but I strongly suspect that the staff at the Post will be hearing of the City's new protector and wondering what the heck is actually going on. BenRG's Rating: 8/10 ~*~*~*~

K9, welcome to the forum! I'm so glad you decloaked and joined in the fun.
Everyone else, as Dorothy's sig says, welcome to a world without rules. Of course the cat's response to that is "as opposed to what?" I'm thrilled to see how many of you, here and at FFnet, commented on the feline logic calisthenics Selina has been doing to rationalize *koff*-fighting. It's the sine qua non of a story where a known and loved character does something that is so completely antithetical to all she is. Normally, it would be the reader who has to be convinced this is still the Selina we know and love (but after 56 tales, you guys know I'm going to deliver that). Here, it's Selina herself who needs convincing. And isn't she cute as she goes about it. Clutterbuck, believe it or not, I did flirt with that fashion police gag. It may still make an appearance. Random and Ichigenka, you won't have to wonder for long about the logs. *naughty grin* Random does make some excellent points about the night's haul. Certainly after Joker and Penguin in her first 90 minutes crimefighting, Selina's average did (as she said) have nowhere to go but down. I think Bruce is still as happy as he can be with the state of affairs. He can never be content when HE isn't the one out there making a difference, but on the whole, he doesn't measure success the way Selina has presented it. It isn't how many arrests are made, it is how safe the city is. His greatest service to crimefighting is all the stuff that never happens because the would-be culprits don't want to risk tangling with him. And since, as far as the world is concerned, Batman is out there like always, the team is doing their thing, etc. There's been no spike in crime, the people of his city are safe, he's happy. Stephensmat, stephensmat, stephensmat. Did you say hard for Selina to "justify" her patrol route? Cats don't have to justify anything. She goes where she goes. She does what she does. And she couldn't care less what anybody else thinks. Ben, you never need to apologize. Your reactions are always worth waiting for. As for the uniquely Selinaesque outlook, "be like unto the cat" is a pretty good design for living, IMO. Speaking of which, time to feed Cashmere. Later, all!

Good to be here Ms. Dee! ^_^ I just hope my chosen screen name doesn't offend Bast and Sekhmet's favored daughter, AKA: Selina. (But then, what is a
Cat but one who denies the existence of unpleasantness?)
I'm afraid I can't say much at the moments since-in my opinion-nothing yet has happened, and while I do have some questions, none are relevant to the events of the story at the moment. But if I may have a moment to go fanboy, I'm currently working on a fanfiction short-story anthology of sorts for the Teen Titans show, and a large part of my personal TT-Universe has Catwoman in it, and whenever I write Selina, yours is the model I work from(yes, there IS a point a point to this). So as to avoid unintended accusations of plagiarism(please, it's an 'homage'), would it be fine if I were to 'borrow' some little trademark nuggets from the early Bat/Cat interactions, and maybe make a tale about Selina's Cat-Tales? You know, had she decided to take it on the road? (C'mon, a villain doing stand-up? That's one ball-o-yarn this cat-fan simply can't leave alone.)

Hmmm.... I seem to be coming in late this time. My appologies. I shall refrain from reiterating all the ways in which my life has turned up-side-down as of
late and just say:
Lol. The very IDEA that Catwoman would make a Duty Log is so absurd, it's funny. However, this is not a true duty log since it is neither her duty (heaven forbid!) nor, more innocently, does she need to keep a log. Oh no. She's writing this because she KNOWS Batman will read it later and she WANTS him to get this little piece of her mind while the emotion is still fresh...but after he's healed up a bit--otherwise, she'd just tell him now. This is a diary that was never meant to be secret. And it is chalk full of examples of how she and Bruce are totally and completely different. Her reasons for crime-fighting, if you can call it that, (and for attatching a duty log reference, lol) sound like a teen trying to convince himself that it was his idea to take out the trash or wash the dishes or mow the lawn. lol. Sorry, Selina, but it's really not a lot different from "I'm not doing this because Mom told me to. I'm doing this because __________." Well, it isn't. Cats rule.

First, there seams to be something wrong with single quotes in the Chapter.
Second, there is no way Selina can avoid Dick and Tim being sarcastic after they read that log. they may even stop to using irony.

K9, responded privately. See your PMs.
Oh and btw, this is the Batcave, not a book club. Nobody gets to read everybody else's logs. That's not how it works.

They may not get to see whatever they want, but word gets around... Bruce is likely to grunt about those logs. And I don't really think that Dick, the king
of puns who really doesn't know better, will miss the opportunity of making fun of Selina patrolling (let's
forgive the boy, this one is too good to pass), and she'll have to remind him of who's boss.
I am curious to see Cassie's reaction. And I believe Tim will blink. Repeatedly. |
