I know I haven't been a frequent poster to this board, though I've been a very frequent reader, but I have some news for everyone; I've been working for nearly a year now (good god) on a story set in the Cat Tales 'verse, as a shout out to Chris and everyone else and the great work that's been done here. Since I first announced that I was working on something, we've been in close correspondence and she's been going over my chapters with an eagle (feline?) eye and helping me clean them up in preparation for unveiling. With Halloween coming up, it's time to finally put my story, Capes and Bats, up for the reading. I hope you'll all enjoy reading it; what I hoped to be a modest and fun little story snowballed into an epic 12+ chapters, but I'm sure you'll find it worth finishing. Posts: 273 09/16/08 09:12 Gothamite	You're off to a good start with chapter 1. Lots of elements, lots of hooks to hang a plot on, lots of ways that plot could go, and all of them looking interesting. The Dark Knight reference is a nice touch. The characters ring true to what we know of the CTverse, and the mysterious figure at the end works well as a cliffy, leaving us wanting more. And its not a Cat-Tales story without some speculation from the readers, so here are some wild guess as to the identity of the last character: Spoiler [+] My first thought, based on "eyes and ears even now joined to his," was someone who could interface with computers directly. This led me to think of HARDAC from BtAS, as much of the CTverse is based on that version and the whole body-snatchers thing would be appropriate for the Halloween theme. On a second reading, I think you were subtly referencing Dracula arriving in England. I doubt that it would be Drac himself, and there are just too many DC characters that this vague description might fit. Somewhat off topic, I find myself wondering what Professor Crane would think of the following Stephen King quote on producing horror fiction: "The 3 types of terror: The Gross-out: the sight of a severed head tumbling down a flight of stairs, it's when the lights go out and something green and slimy splatters against your arm. The Horror: the unnatural, spiders the size of bears, the dead waking up and walking around, it's when the lights go out and something with claws grabs you by the arm. And the last and worse one: Terror, when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute. It's when the lights go out and you feel something behind you, you hear it, you feel its breath against your ear, but when you turn around, there's nothing there..." Also from King: "If I cannot horrify, I'll go for the gross-out. I'm not proud."

Posts: 215 09/17/08 22:00	Excellent first chapter, Wanders. The more I read of the Bruce/Barbara scene, the more I was thinking, "OH! This is rich! This could get Good!" So, kudos. Eddy and Jonathan were fun, but that third section was really the hook for me. ^_^ And I'd have to say that I prefer the Terror type of "terror", though I'll settle for Gross-Out. Horror does nothing for me--usually a bore. shrugs Welcome to a world without rules!

Posts: 1746 09/20/08 21:46	Geez; this is good stuff. I do read your own style, but a distinct CT flavor to this (please take it as a sincere compliment). So far, I found them to be quick reads, but effective storytelling; doesn't seem to be any superfluous words. I'm looking forward to the next chapter. THANKS!

I was, yes, aiming to do this in CT-style to fit in with the rest of the stories, though my own inevitibly shows through ^^ it was a fun writing challenge, and certain aspects, especially the detective work (more on that in the next chapter) and getting into Scarecrow's mindspace were interesting. The new phobia was a particularly amusing bit. So true, but still amusing. I think it's pretty obvious who our mysterious figure from last chapter was. Either that, or someone is doing a heck of a job making it look like that. Also, gotta say that I love how you've meshed the two realities: Cat-tales and Batman Begins. The interactions and personalities displayed here are clearly in line with a fic set in the CT-verse, so, if nothing else, your efforts have paid off so far. Batman's reaction to Barbara's news in the first chapter was quite amusing. I don't know which was better, his reaction to some Hollywood dimwits making that sort of movie in "His" city (and what a brilliant allusion to TDK), or the fact that someone else told him of this development. The fact that Barbara deliberately delivered the news the old-fashioned way (in person) was definitely funny. Scarecrow, Scarecrow, Scarecrow... everyone either ignores you as a second-rater or freaks out when you enter the room. Like Eddie. He spent the first chapter dismissing your enthusiasm with All Hallow's Eve, then panics when you don't send your annual invite and desperately tries to arrange a Rogue's Night In (with invitations sent to a (former?) Rogue guaranteed to pummel the living daylights out of you if you get out of line. Anyways, you go to all this trouble to make your plans for Halloween, get rewarded by a personal visit from the Dark Knight, get a tingle in your toes when he tries to scare you... and almost get squished. Oh well, better luck next year... So... why did that freighter arrive in such an unorthodox fashion? What exactly was it carrying? I'm not sure, but I am curious to find out.

Seriously, though...so far the visitor's traits and methods seem consistent with who I'm thinking of; someone who's been a prominent Elseworlds Batman villain. Though it may be all misdirection.

All the little details and the attention to his particular personality quirks are delicious! It was especially fun to realise why Joker shut up and to imagine what must have been going through his head at that precise moment. Ha ha! Totally can't wait for the next chapter. Someone, or another individual connected with someone, who can "persuade" people to do their bidding, isn't afraid to kill, can communicate with Scarecrow telepathically (or a damn good simile of telepathy), and has the clout to get Crane released (as opposed to sprung). And on top of that, Batman is still playing catch-up regarding who this guy is, what these "soil samples" are, and what the endgame might be. Not a good sign when the World's Greatest Detective is scratching his head. The bit on Arkham Asylum regarding the various means of dealing with Joker, and how it affects the staff and inmates/patients, is a nice touch. It helps make characters like Crane more well-rounded. In addition, it helps elicit a bit of sympathy for Crane--not because he's a poor skinny sap who can get beaten up by just about anyone, but because he's evidently in thrall to this new, dark, Master. I am definitely looking forward to the next chapter and its contents (including, perhaps, further developments on Hollywood's latest "brilliant" idea.

Posts: 32 10/01/08 15:43	From these I\u2019d gleaned that Drachenskind was owned by someone named Graf Ordog, Corvinus by a Marquis DeLaempri, Danesti by a guy named Volkoslak. He was Russian or Serbian as far as any of his employees knew. White Knight was run by a poorly-known Arabian sheik named Al-Daruc. Nobody working at any of the companies had ever met their employers in person, which was understandable, as they were all based overseas. Trying not to be too spoily, but still... Spoiler [+] Well, besides the ones Selena and Eddie unscrambled, I'll note that "Son of the Dragon" was a title/cognomen of a particular 15th-century Wallachian nobleman, who is known today by a neologized version of that name. And Ordog is a demonic creature from Hungarian mythology, while volkoslak/volkodlak is a Slovenian name for a monster you can probably guess at by this point. White Knight is probably a reference to the very positive reputation of the aforementioned nobleman, but I wouldn't swear to it... and the House of Dăneşti was a Romanian noble family. So yeah, just in time for Halloween.
