I love listening to music when I work, and the one thing graphics work has over writing is that I can listen to anything at all. Open media center, shuffle, play. No muss, no fuss.

With writing, I have to limit myself to non-vocal selection or it becomes a distraction. I have a few playlists, not broken down by mood the way many people assume. Just a nice collection of non-vocal jazz and classical. It's nice, but there isn't the spark and spontaneity of the having the whole library to choose from.

The result is that I got out of the habit of listening to music when I write, and I've only recently resumed the practice. Wow, what a difference.

Now if I could just find what happened to those Bat Out of Hell III tracks.

*exit Chris, muttering how I know I had them when I wrote The New Black
