Well now this is bad.
I have the urge to rave about the ending, and make chaotic predictions, so while I'm clinging to the rational, I'll just make this point: I have to say I'm glad for the flashback sequences here. See, the history of these characters has been told and retold in every generation of comics, but Chris has set a number of these characters apart from DC quite dramatically, so it's good to see the Cat-Verse Origin stories from time to time. Right. That's done, now I can talk about the scary. This is bad. Funny, I actually find myself hoping that Ivy comes charging in to spritz him FAST. If Bruce was right, and Two face is partying like it's 2022, then Selina's not getting the luxury of a coin toss. Add to that, the fact that Selina's always been a point of contention between Harvey and his evil twin. Two Face sees Catwoman the way all male evil people see her, but Harvey won't even let the thought form enough to get to a coin toss. But Harvey's not in right now, karma has demanded that the bad guy get control of the bridge for a while. And with Batman busily checking fountains for socialites, he's not present either. In fact, the only thing scarier than what Harvey will do, if how the Bat will react. Chris made a point in this chapter of detailing the ways in which Batman had trouble with Harvey/TwoFace because of their personal friendship. But now, when presented with an uber-twoface holding Selina hostage, what effect that history may have on his actions/reactions is anyone's guess. You guys all can't wait to see what happens next, I can barely bring myself to watch. This is bad. |

It is at this time that I am reminded of a point in this play when the leader of the players says to the two leads, "Things will have gone as far as they
can possibly go when things have gotten as bad as they can reasonably get."
What the character didn't say was that the definition of "reasonably" varies from person to person. As a writer, I can safely say without fear of contradiction that if you really want to write a compelling, meaningful story, you have to learn to hate your characters to some degree. It's the only way you can write a story and put the heroes through situations that can only be described as hellish, and commit yourself to giving those characters scars as part of it. However, if you start looking forward to scarring your characters, it may be time to seek professional help. SCARING the characters frequently, that's fine. Heck, that's comedy gold. (grins) |

Oh... wow! That is all that I can say here! Chris, you outdid yourself this time with an unexpected twist.
Wow, I mean that, wow! Of course, in all honesty, all the clues were there, I just couldn't put them together to tell the story. Bruce was - that's why he's the World's Greatest Detective, I guess. I enjoyed the Selina POV in this. I've heard that, in a fight like this one, you do get disconnected and it all seems to be happening to someone else. I also liked the talk between Bruce and Selina. Isn't it odd that Batman should ultimately turn out to be the optimist? Perhaps not because, in the end, the Mission is the belief that one man can make a difference. If that isn't optimism, I don't know what is. Aw! Pammy is in love! With Harvey no less (that is a significant qualifier)! This is beginning to feel like what happened with Talia and Greg Brady. Of course, our heroes do need someone to convince Harvey that there is still hope for him. Who better than a woman who, despite herself, has finally ralised that she loves him because of all his good qualities? I figure that next chapter will be the wrap-up. Will they save Harvey from himself? BenRG's Rating: 9/10 P.S.: I have a freaky idea: Harvey becomes "The Incredible Two-Face". Normally he is Harvey Dent, a mild-mannered attorney-at-law. But when he becomes angry a horrific transformation takes place: He becomes a creature of unimaginable hate and violence - he becomes... Two-Face. And so, Harvey Dent is forced to wander from place to place, never able to rest until he is able to tame the beat that lies within him... [closing credits with Harvey in a plaid shirt and jeans walking off into the distance trying to hitch-hike as the 'The Incredible Hulk' TV show end credits music plays] ~*~*~*~

Oh Chris, this is just . . . wow. So . . . wow. I'm at a loss for words.
I've spent the whole story in just as much in denial as Selina. This part: That echoed my thoughts exactly. And Bruce's hope at the end. Really that whole ending scene. I STILL believe in you, Harvey! 'Scuse me, I'm going to go cry now. |

Oh lawdy, Chris. I don't think I've ever seen you write such a violent scene in any of your fics (at least that I can remember). I don't know if
depicting something that brutal was troublesome to write for you, but you didn't seem to have a problem; excellent, graphic description. Geez, I hope my

Hi all! Prodigal writer has returned to the thread. I've been hiding because I never know quite what to say when I am pocketing a plot twist. I feel like
such a tease. So I kept my distance and let the speculation run wild. Now that the big secret is out, here we go. In no particular order…
KUDOS to ussentinel for spotting the Gotham Intercontinental Hotel. There are quite a few places named in this Tale that are taken from the Dark Knight ARG and/or what is known of the movie to come. Gotham National Bank
MORE KUDOS to Random Equinox. You were the only one to catch the significance of the flashbacks in Chapter 5, with the origin of Harvey's Two-Face leading up to the revelation of… Harvey is Two-Face. Vernon! Eh, sorry, Dude. BenRG, I delight in your reviews chapter after chapter. Thanks for the peek into one reader's experience. I can't tell you how terrific that is. Allaine, ditto. stephensmat, you nailed it. "Two face is partying like it's 2022, then Selina's not getting the luxury of a coin toss." Quite a few of
those phrases and others from a few other folks on previous chapters helped me out with this chapter, bringing vague elements into sharp focus without sending
me back to reread earlier material.
Jarissa, I was cheering you on, darlin'. You knew there was something about that Chapter 1 sequence where Harvey saw someone outside the HC window. That counts for more than guessing who it was. So Kudos to you too. (Nathan, Jaberwocky, Educated Redneck, anyone I'm not managing to single out by name, consider yourself back-patted also. I'm just trying to get as much pent up material out there as quickly as possible… heh, just like Face.) Oh, yes… ussentinel. Good point about the violence. I have always admitted that action is not my strong point. I do hope I can pull it off when the story calls for it. Most fights in CT occur in the background and don't need elaborate descriptions. If you have read 10 comic books, you have seen it 20 times before. This fight was much different, since-well, let's be frank-since Selina's performance was so far below par. Caught by surprise + the shock of seeing Harvey + getting stabbed, it adds up to one very bad day for kitty. Don't worry though, she lands on her feet. It's a cat thing. SteelBlaidd, ouch. Heal quick.

Chris Dee wrote: You know why none of us were demanding details on that part? Because we fell for it too. We fell into the exact same way of thinking that Harvey himself had. When Harvey saw that face, whoever it was, he was just Harvey. Just Harvey Dent. And Harvey Dent is the good half of the coin. He couldn't possibly do anything evil, that's the other guy, and the other guy was gone. So here it is. With Magic there's always a price, and the price is simple: In exchange for a Harvey to have a time without TwoFace, TwoFace gets some time without Harvey holding him back. And the real tragedy is, now that TwoFace will be back on the "At Large" list, so Bruce will remember to look him up, and Selina will remember to place a call. We've got Harvey back, as long as we can get him back to the half-mad loon we love. The half that Ivy love/d that is. The alt-story in the last few chapters was Harvey's transformation to TwoFace, and now the alt-storyline is Ivy's search for him. Looks like the showdown is going to be at Vault. There are, appropriately enough, two possibilities. 1) Darth Duality will trash the whole damn place, not caring that it is Selina's, not caring that his buddies are all there, and this will give both batman the opportunity to put him in Arkham, and Oswald the opportunity to get the Iceburg back on it's feet, removing Catwoman from the throne. 2) Harvey will smash his way in, just as Eddie's making another impassioned toast to the Great Harvey TwoFace, and that, combined with everyone thrilled he's back, plus the fact that they're all friends, will give Harvey enough to get a grip and at least reach for the coin again, restoring the status quo. |

Relax buddy. Sure Harvey hasn't let you into the drivers seat for the last 6 or 7 months, but it's not like he was out volunteering for Habitat for
Humanity, or serving up soup at the homeless shelter. He bought some suits, had some steaks, and got laid a lot. Which means you had some steak and got laid a
lot, so thats a wash. Just push an old lady down some stairs or something and you'll be square....or squared as it were.

From what I've heard and read, Peter Parker, known in Marvel Comics as (the [insert adjective]) Spiderman, can never catch a break. Every time things are
going well, something comes along to royally muck things up. It looks like Harvey's in exactly the same boat, though the powers that be aren't
screwing him over just for the hell of it. Unfortunately, that doesn't escape the fact that the worst fears of many readers have come true.
Selina, like many of us, was still hoping that "Dr. Two-rants" was behind all this nonsense, not Harvey. She was repeating her denial, over and over. Then she saw his face. With all the little details that no mere copycat could get right. And all our hearts sank. The fight sequences were definitely more graphic than that of most Cat-Tales, though that hammered home just how serious things were. I agree that Catwoman wasn't at the top of her game, for reasons that were mentioned before. Batman put up a better performance, but he was obviously affected by the personal and emotional nature of this case. At least they managed to sit down long enough to catch their breath. It was clear they both needed to talk, but I loved how they did it: sesame noodles. Perfect. It was unusual to see how Catwoman and Batman swapped the voice of hope and optimism for the "brooding vortex of despair". At the same time, though, they remained in character. Especially given the context: Selina was emotionally distraught because she hasn't had the benefit of time to process these revelations, while Batman's hope is based on the evidence he's seen and the analysis he's performed: any "progress" Harvey's made was a facade that prevented everyone, including himself, from seeing that he never dealt with his negative impulses. While he was fine on the surface, inside he was a ticking time-bomb just waiting for a trigger to explode. And since Harvey's been cruising for all this time without any input from Darth, now Darth feels it's his turn to let loose without having to let the goody two-shoes have his say. Except... Harvey is having some say. As Batman pointed out, Vernon (and Batman, but that's avoiding the main issue) was indirectly responsible for creating Darth, and the two-obsessed character we know as Two-Face. You'd have to go to a lot of work to get over the gratitude one must feel towards your creator, and that hasn't happened. Harvey, on the other hand, has a very large grievance against the man who saddled him with what he sees as an unwanted tenant, ruined his career, and destroyed his marriage and family. At the same time, Harvey performed CPR on Vernon. Which means Harvey hasn't left the building yet, and there is still a spark of hope. At the risk of interrupting the flow of this otherwise typically long-winded commentary, Pammy reminds me so much of Talia right now. As BenRG noted, they both have a tendency to plant their feet firmly in the land of Denial, and rationalize everything so it comes out the way they want it. I can just see it now: "I'm trying to find Harvey, but it doesn't mean I love him. I'm going to all his old hangouts and haunts, but it doesn't mean I love him. I can't stop thinking about Harvey, but it doesn't mean I love... oh wait. Oh, if I weren't a perfect Goddess, I'd be such an idiot!" The revelation that Two-Face will likely be heading to the Vault, and run into all those potential hostages, is the latest heartstopping cliffhanger in this Cat-Tales. Hopefully Eddie will be there to talk to Darth, Rogue to Rogue. Hopefully Batman and Catwoman will be able to help Harvey (wow. Think about it: Batman, Catman and Riddler--the new trinity of the DCU). Hopefully, we'll see some kind of resolution that comes close to a happy ending. As Selina said after hearing how Jason tried to help Harvey, "It doesn't cost anything to hope." |

I really loved this chapter. I had so many theories for why Two-Face was back, and it never occurred to me that he did it to himself. I think I relied too
much on the notion that this was being done TO him.
Pammy - god, I love this girl. It's scary how reminiscent she is of Talia sometimes, in that sheer blinding self-delusion. She can go looking for Harvey all day, stop at all the places they used to go to, and all the while tell herself that she certainly doesn't want to be with him any more, and that she doesn't even like him? (And why is it that she's got a better shot with Harv than Harl in your stories, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest?) You know, if they can "save" Harvey (how the hell did Selina get to the point where having him back to the old days is the best-case scenario?), you might have a situation where the new Two-Faced Harvey is not only sane and free of Darth, but more mentally sound than he was a few days ago as Harvey Fullface? (Hmmm. I wonder how he integrates himself into the world if it's apparent to all that see him that he's Two-Face, not just those who remember what Harvey Dent looked like. Of course, then again, redemption isn't supposed to be easy, is it?) A few things that jumped out at me: - I really do love the image of Catwoman exiting a hospital in full regalia and broad daylight. Knowing Gothamites, there was an initial surprise for the passers-by, followed by, "Oh look, never mind, it's one of those not-going-to-kill-me Rogues." - I'm already thinking - if Harvey gets out of this, won't he just be arraigned for attempted murder now? (Of course, you could argue temporary insanity. It'd be true.) - Out of curiosity, what happened to Vernon after the trial? (As I recall, in the comics Two-Face murdered him, so obviously we've strayed from canon
here.) From the description of the trial in the previous chapter, there appears to be a lot of circumstantial evidence but nothing concrete linking him. Still,
I can't imagine that he walked away scot-free, since it appears there was no other way Maroni could have acquired the acid. I imagine it would have cast a
cloud over his career. (I hear Eric Roberts is playing him in the new movie?)
Sincerely, Allaine

hmmm... uhmm.. er. I think the only thing my brain can put to words right now is that this has the making of a Nightwing/Robin classic degeneration of
comedy/tragedy of EPIC proportions. Other than the fact that neither are involved, but Pam is and Twoffer's a bit stab happy.
Normally, I can generally see what way the story will go at least in tone but as of right now I'm completely baffled. |

Oh. Wow. Pammy. I mean really just . . . wow. That's quite a promise.
I loved: I was rereading part of Such An Idiot earlier. It really kind of highlights some of the ways Bruce has changed since the beginning of the series. This might not be the single craziest protocol ever, but it's probably in the top ten. But it's also brilliant. (Of course it's brilliant. He's Batman.) I have to admit that I wasn't thrilled when Ivy first showed up in this story. Not to put too fine a point on it, she's annoying. Sometimes she's annoying and it's funny and sometimes she's annoying and you want to strangle her, and sometimes you feel sorry for her and - actually I can't remember it right now, but I know there's a line in Cat Tales about feeling sorry for Pammy and how she'll set you straight. At any rate, I was really a lot more interested in what was going on with Harvey in this story. Anyway, this new chapter changed my mind and I can't wait to see what happens next. But while reading this it hit me that Pammy's relationship with Harvey reminds me of . . . me. *cringe* Well, me at, looking back, what was probably my most annoying age ever. I'm was very socially awkward when I was a kid. When I was 13-15, I would INSIST that I didn't want any friends. (Of course I didn't need friends. Friends made things complicated. No, of course I wasn't lonely. I didn't need anybody!) The fact was that I WAS lonely and I HAD tried making friends and had my feelings hurt and didn't want to admit it. So rather than admitting it, trying again and putting myself out there to maybe get my feelings hurt again, I spent about two years insisting I didn't need anybody and that other people were stupid anyway. And having just revealed that extremely embarrassing information about my teenage years, I'm going to go to the store and buy some ping pong balls. (No, seriously, I am. My cat, Jasper, likes to bat them around the kitchen floor.) |
