Posts: 1746 04/01/08 21:21	VERY intriguing theory there, Fett. Aside from the content itself, this is the first fic that I've ever seen the term "willy-nilly." Sorry to pick that out, but I got a kick out of it; it's a mildly popular catchphrase making a comeback in the Chicago area, perhaps in part due to an AM sports talk guy who says that A LOT. Back to the chapter: "Stay away from the Van Gough" -- I thought that was damn clever, and just the right element which really, really makes me enjoy Chris' fic and takes it up another level. (Well, the whole Vault scene was great!) I want to say the same about Batman's detective work with the analyzation of the particle samples from the grapnel hook. *still too timid to commit to any theories, but enjoying the ride!

But don't despair, you've got an 'in' with the new Queen of the Underworld, and as luck would have it, the first day you're back on the job, Bruce and Selina finally deign to notice your existence again. That stuff is dum te dum "not without a price". I can see the spirit of two face berifed of a body possessing someone eleses. That is a scary thought. Could be that Harvey decideds to settle the spirit to take it back in himself and "save" the rest of Gothom. That would realy suck and be cool. But then again I could be wrong. About Bruce something they never covered in the comics. A mixed martial arts fighter should rest up for at LEAST a month between fight if he does not want to end up perminatly hurt. Only other person or group who would gain from Harvey's relapse or forced relapse would be someone associated with Boss Marconi. I dont think thats going to happen.... could be be Hush/Thomas Elliot (ok thats a bad call I know) but it sucks eihter not seeing the clues or not having one... with me it a flip of the coin for either. Even with a bump on the head, a clear-eyed Selina ought to be able to tell the difference between Harvey Two-Face and Dr. Yarling in Two-Face makeup. So it's either Harvey or someone who can mimic his appearance near-perfectly. Playing my hunch about the twist, I'm thinking Clayface. Now I'm just trying to guess as to motive. My first thought was a plan to sucker Ivy in, but I don't think Matt would feel the need to even the score there. After what happened in the greenhouse, he's ahead on points. I'm guessing Ivy will factor into the story later on, but she's not the target. In a bizarre sort of way, I think Selina is. Just like Bruce said he'd go back and do double the crime just so everything could even out Glad Bruce did notice the Ivy angle though. He seems to be in quite trapped in his memories about the creation of two face, it's really sad. Darn you cliff hanger!!!! but yeah I suspect the good doctor will be walking in at any second now

Spoiler [+] If I recall correctly Clayface has a thing for Selina as mentioned in Blueprints and has been demonstrated by the fact that he chose to act as her bodygaurd at the Vault. Twoface's comment at the end makes it sound like he wants to be with her. Given the way she acted during the toast, Hagan probably decided that impersonating Twoface was a good way to get her to be with him. As a rogue, Clayface knows how Twoface operates and how he behaves. Plus, as a shapeshifter/actor, he has no problems impersonating people. That's my twist to Nathan's theory.

Posts: 548 04/15/08 04:33	God, this is twistier than the first time we saw Sixth Sense. Harvey saw somebody, back in the beginning, and had trouble believing it. Who did he see? I feel like I should imitate the Bear of Very Little Brain, sit on my stool in the corner with my hand dramatically pressed to my forehead and mutter, "Think, think, think, think." Note for a round of web maintenance: I see most end-punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points) and all the commas, semicolons, and colons in the entire catwoman-cattales.com site, but other punctuation is coming up as a solid diamond with a question mark-shaped hollow in the center. (EDDIE, DAGNABBIT!!) This includes all commas, quotation marks, apostrophes, hyphens, dashes, and at least two spots that I think the diamond is supposed to be a four-dot elipsis: Spoiler [+] �Yeah, I hit Mickey Gazzo and his brother Frankie,� Sal said calmly, his mouth set in smug defiance. �We tossed their bodies in the Gotham River. Lotsa wiseguys you�re looking for are in the Gotham River. Maybe that�s why I got an ulcer from drinking the water�� He declined to join them, but Harvey was all for it� And then there's Bruce's whole conversation with Alfred, of course. Diamonds abound instead of dashes. The laptop, here, is using Firefox 2.0.0.13 and runs the Vista Virus, all patched up, for its operating system. I don't have a huge number of fonts installed here, so if it's something MS Word (or other word-processing software) carries above and beyond the regular True Type Fonts and the system font, that might be the source of the riddle. (I used to include instructions that any digital editing would require that they write the document with "AutoFormat Characters" turned off, because it made hash of "curling" the apostrophes and quotation marks, borked the spacing between end punctuation for one sentence and the start of the next sentence, and turned hyphens and dashes into glyphs.) Anyway, I don't see anyplace that a diamond ought to be a command to turn surrounded text into italicized, bold, or underlined text; and while I can't find any bolded or underlined text in this chapter, italics are showing up just fine. So's the strikethrough effect. None of this used to be the case, at least not a few months ago, so what is my machine missing? Addendum: just tested with my PDA, and diamond-questions again there. I, uh, can't install new fonts onto my PDA. I can install them onto a program the PDA carries, but some genius didn't think a user would want new fonts on web-viewable documents. Palm T\|X, proprietary little browser software, again all patched up as current as it'll get. I'm one of those people who "hear" every letter of each word as I read them, and how they shape one another; so, yes, I'm going to totally miss a reasonable point if it's discussing makeup instead of knaves. Not that there aren't some hilarious correlations! Anyway, please be patient with me on this.

Here's the relevant passage from chapter one, left unspoiled cuz what the heck would anyone be doing reading this if they haven't read chapter one yet? Harvey was aware that the balance of power had shifted from his Dentmeister days. Then, the most beautiful women his age were prizes to be won. Now, he as a handsome, affluent, single, straight man was the rare commodity. But he had been Two-Face. If they could overlook his past as Darth Duality, he could certainly overlook a little Botox and stretch marks. Still, he knew these relationships were built on a foundation of compromise and desperation. Nobody was in love; it was just a mutually agreeable social arrangement. At this point in his life, what more did he expect? He had spent the best years of his life as a coin-flipping… homicidal… Harvey blinked. The tricks the mind plays. A few seconds thinking about Two-Face and for a moment he actually thought he saw… Nah. Heh, heh. Ridiculous. Followed later by: Selina had lived in the same building for years… of course, her future neighbors had no idea she was Catwoman when she moved in. Still, it was just monstrous that he, Harvey Dent, who only became Two-Face in the course of his duties as a prosecutor to keep those people SAFE from a criminal element which actually included Selina Kyle, dear friend though she was, was now thought unfit to live in her building? The idea that he, Harvey Dent was being penalized for… Good lord-outside the window-there he was again! Inside the spoiler is why I think this supports the theory I had spoilered in my previous post: Spoiler [+] Harvey, of course, leaps to the obvious conclusion for him, and begins worrying that Two-Face is back. We all leap to the conclusion that there's a Two-Face impersonator. The red herring of Dr. Yarling is presented, but even if Yarling somehow knew enough to fool a groggy Batman, he doesn't know enough to fool a clear-headed Selina, even for a second. So, we have Harvey seeing a Two-Face we've presumed is an impostor, and it's good enough to fool, briefly at least, Batman and Catwoman. I again say that I think it's Clayface.

Posts: 796 04/15/08 08:45	This is just responding to Jarissa's font issue, everyone else may skip it unless you are having similar issues. The html version of the stories are in the Verdana font, which is a standard preinstalled on Windows OS's and very legible for computer screens, hence its use on Amazon.com. So I don't think you need to install anything. The issue you hare having is with curly quotes and long dashes. The problem is that too many computer geeks think "Microsoft sucks. Because they cut a corner back in 1994, you can't use curly quotes" is the answer, rather than actually solving the problem. Curly quotes aren't going away, they're a publishing standard. But googling for a solution turns up so many tirades against Microsoft whenever anyone poses a question, it's almost impossible to FIND THE ANSWER. Now then, here is my best guess for a fix on Firefox, with the caveat that I couldn't get any expert help from anywhere. Go to your VIEW menu, go to CHARACTER ENCODING, and my guess is that you are set to something like ISO-8891. Try the next one down, UNICODE (UTF-8), close browser, try a CT page and see if that is any better. If not, try the next one down WINDOWS-1252, and if that doesn't, perhaps ENGLISH-ASCII.

Posts: 1780 04/15/08 10:08	Wow. Clearly this is NOT like the time where, as Bruce mentions, 2F had to make up for a rigged coin. I think the final words coming from 2F's mouth suggest that. Two could certainly make lascivious remarks to Selina, but suggesting he wants to throw her down and ravish her on the spot? This is like Darth on steroids. I find myself turning back again to a theory I had pondered earlier, the notion that somehow "Darth" (for lack of a better word, even though no one would ever confuse Two-Face with Vader) has become a separate entity. The idea that he existed as a second personality for so many years that he became a separate person who could not be unmade with a flick of a wand. So that he's either a kind of spirit, possessing another individual (after all, the very nature of Darth is to be one-half of a whole - he'd feel more comfortable inside somebody's head, as opposed to having a body to himself), or that he has manifested as flesh and is operating as a counterweight to Fullface Harvey. (Wouldn't it be great if we could just blame Etrigan for this?) This being would have all Harvey's knowledge of law, criminology, and personal relationships. Yes, I'm reaching here. But I remember a story I read once that claimed that Sherlock Holmes had become a spirit, even though technically fictional characters can't die and therefore cannot become spirits, because when Sir Doyle killed him off, the letters he received proved that millions of readers believed him to be real and alive, and their belief gave him "life" after "death". Digression. Oh Selina, making the same mistake we wanted to make? (If it IS a mistake.) You threw Yarling at us earlier as a possible candidate for the second Two-Face, and I'm sure most people like me would jump at the suggestion. And so would Selina. You gave her the excuse she wanted, to believe that Harvey was still cured. I had a bad feeling this was a mistake. Although really, it does strike me as one hell of a coincidence that Selina abandoned her post to follow a man who went on a "two" rant. It could just be a plot device, but it's an awfully convenient one, and I wonder - some people are lucky, and some people make their own. Has Darth somehow fed off and exploited this two-doc with whom he has a past history? Of course, I also wonder if the object of this story is to see how drastically people will contort reason and logic in order to hold out hope that we shouldn't believe what we're seeing. I don't think any reader is unaware of what this will do to our favorite characters. It's just that I look at the 2F confronting Selina. With her in the past, he was always part Harvey. Here, Harv seems completely absent. It's all quite troubling. And then there's my delightful girl, Pammy. I know she doesn't want to be compared to the loathsome Joker or anything connected to him, but I guess she gets to be the wild card here. She might not even play a role, but we wonder if she might. (I hope she does. I hope it makes things easier rather than harder. I'd like to think that on occasion her actions don't end with the words "self" and "destructive". I'm probably screwed.) But it's nice that we can't see inside her head either. Based on what we know of her, we can reasonably predict motives and methods, but I have to assume you're still keeping things from us. Odd that one of your stories' best qualities are their ability to get inside the heads of these wackjobs, and now you're scoring points by shutting us out. I liked the opening scene, told as if it was from Harvey's view, that at last we were getting something from his POV, only for you to yank that away. It's becoming an extremely dark story. I'm reminded more every chapter of the fic where Bruce investigated the dying man who might have been his parents' killer. It's like the most I can hope for is "semi-happy ending". Posts: 292 04/15/08 13:44	Well, another red herring appears to have been debunked, and the "Revenge of the Sit-" sorry, wrong story. Anyways, a certain possibility is becoming more likely, but perhaps I should start from the beginning. I suspect one reason flashbacks are used in stories is to emphasize and further a theme or the overall plot (it's certainly better than taking up space). Certainly, this chapter is a perfect example: the flashbacks illustrate Batman's role in planning how to take the Maroni and Falcone down, unveil how the trial developed in exquisite and ultimately tragic detail, and emphasize how, despite his best efforts, Batman can't help but take this case personally. He bears some responsibility for this whole mess: it was his plan that was followed, it was his friend who paid the price, and it is his friend who is the subject and a suspect in this investigation. What's really frustrating is the unknown: from his perspective, there's no proof that firmly clears or indicts Harvey, so the possibility that he's behind the Two-Face incidents is left hanging there, nagging and gnawing away. Sooner or later, Batman may have to cross paths with the Rogues. Right now, they're all off on their own, following their own paths. If he compares notes with Eddie or Pammy, the latter of which is actually engaged in her own "Where's Harvey" search, they might come up with something. Even the more likely scenario of interrogating them, possibly getting some answers or clues, and/or following them might unearth something new. Right now, he's back at square one, and going nowhere fast. Speaking of square one, Selina went from her vigil outside Vernon's door to following Dr. Yarling and back to Vernon. We all know why she pursued Dr. Yarling. She, like us, picked up on the "two" references. Maybe that's the problem: Dr. Yarling was a convincing suspect and, at this point, red herring because our general familiarity with the Batman series, Cat-Tales and this particular story have our filters, Selina's included, fine-tuned for "two" references. As a result, she was hyped on beating Dr. Yarling back to Vernon's room and catching him off guard... which led to her being caught off guard. At this point, I'm really hoping that the spirit of Two-Face has manifested itself in some way and is running loose. I'd also be willing to accept the notion that Clayface or someone had the nerve to play copycat. Otherwise, the remaining possibility is that Harvey has relapsed and he's time-sharing with Darth again. Man oh man oh man...

Now it's put me back to UTF-8. Firefox and I are going to have a few stern words, I can see this already. A cliffhanger. You are evil Chris - Evil, evil, evil! This was a great chapter - well worth the wait. Okay, as it has been a few days since the chapter was posted, I won't go with spoiler tags. Moderators should feel free to edit my post to add them if they wish. I'm still not definately convinced that this is Harvey. Okay, Selina is convinced, but she is concussed and in shock. She sees what she thinks is Harvey but that doesn't necessarily mean anything as Alfred has already pointed out to Bruce. As someone pointed out, Clayface could pull this off and he definately has the obsession with Selina that 'Two-Face' shows here. That doctor definately is involved at some level, too. Chris wouldn't have gone to all this trouble just to create a red herring, at least I presume not. Possibly there is a magical explanation, but I'm betting that this will turn out to be something mundane and aimed either at Batman or Selina herself. I loved the flashback to the Maroini trial. Too often, all focus is put on the moment where Two-Face was created and not enough on the background to the case and Batman's own involvement. Harvey was Bruce's friend and Batman's ally for many years, so fighting Two-Face has a particular personal aspect for Bruce. He is, in many ways, all of what Bruce regards as his personal failures made flesh. If Selina is seriously hurt in this confrontation, it will only get worse (hell, it might make Hell Month seem like a family picnic for the Rogues). I can also see why the ADA is considered a likely target for Two-Face - that sort of betrayal cannot be allowed to go without some pay-back. I'm surprised that Harvey didn't off the guy long ago. I'm not sure if Selina is ready to take suggestions, but I suggest using her claws and then bugging out (Two-Face isn't likley to attempt to pursue his attack on the ADA now he has been rumbled).
