Posts: 0 02/08/02 08:03	Tags : None I usually watch dramatic movies. Often artsy. And some romantic comedies here and there. And usually any animated movie I can get my hands on. Well, last week I downloaded the movie, Legally Blonde. Don't know why. Was bored and I think I saw a dvd advertisement for it in a pop-up somewhere. Anyways, I digress... I downloaded it and watched it and I was suprised to find that it was NOTHING at all of what I expected. It was sweet, funny, heart-warming and cute. Not dumb nor ditzy. So my question is: Did you ever experience that? Thought that a movie was gonna suck and then it turned out to be suprisingly good? If so, what was it, what did u think it was gonna be like and what did it turn out to be like? On the flip side, what movies did you hate but did not expect to hate it?

Posts: 442 02/08/02 13:54	I got a flipside example for ya Celia. See I'm a big John Carpenter fan. (Sue me Miss Kitty, ya can't have caviar all the time sometimes ya need a bag of Doritos) I love virtually all his movies. My favorite John Carpenter movie of all time being Escape From New York. So a few years back when I heard they were making a sequel called Escape from L.A. I was jazzed. I mean the return of Snake Plisken was something I'd waited over a decade for after all. Then it got better I bought the Soundtrack which was released the week before the film. I mean it had Rob Zombie, Filter, etc. Totally kick ass Metal Bands plus Tori Amos doing "Professional Widow". I was psyhed. Thenb I get even better news that Steve Buscemi plays a roile in the film by movie day I'm almost walking on air as I threaten and cajole my friends to go see this work of art with me on it's very first showing at noon. I took the day off work and everything. I even planned to stay and see it at least another time . Ok to put this story out of its misery, if you haven't seen Escape From L.A. It's crap. Complete and utter sub B-Movie Shyte. Even Carpenter hated it and didn't want to release it after Disney threw their tantrum and he had to reshoot the last half hour to avoid a lawsuit, but the Movie Company foreced it out and kept him under a gag order via his contract to not say anything bad till after it had been released. One of the sadder days in my career as a fanboy of directors I must admit and one of the many reasons I think certain people in Hollywood need to beaten soundly.

I've got a good dozen guilty pleasures like this. The big one that comes to mind that I totally didn't expect to enjoy but did: Tomb Raider. WIll have to post more as they occur to me. Posts: 33 02/11/02 01:37	Im a big Bruce Willis fan. I cant say anything bad about him, even though I didnt like Armageddon (and I think I even spelled it wrong). Im not big on those 'end of the world cuz a big ass comit is gonna crash into us' movies, and I hated how he died. Cant have Bruno dying! One part of Armageddon (bask in my ignorance of spelling...I think I spelled bask wrong too..) that I like was when whats his name (Im so in touch with whats going on, arnt I?) was straddlin the big missle and hes riding it like a....bull (you all thought I was gonna say something else, you sick pervs, jk) and he goes "I can feel the power between my legs!" And the other guy comes in and goes, "Please get off the nuclear war head." Yeah, I enjoy bad sexual humor like that. Oh, and violence. Got to love violence. And special effects! Have to have those! .... But anyways, yeah, I love Bruce Willis.

Posts: 0 02/11/02 22:15	blah. i'm not a huge arnie fan. i forgot to mention that. heh. i might see it. but i have a hard time getting into that too much. i don't really have a fav action star, but i do like some of the more believable scenrios. not always and i can really get into the non-believable ones if they're done right. fantasy stories are also good too. like lord of the rings stuff. mmmmm. hobbits. why did they make the hobbits so damn sexy?! damnit! and things like harry potter. that was a good movie too. heh. good cast! um...that got a lil off track, didn't it? point? moral? don't waste good money going to a movie theater to see a romantic/comedy type film. go to the movie theater to see the shoot em up/blow em up and adventure films! Lord of the Rings, yes, agreed. Super flick. And Harry Potter was fun too. But those weren't a surprise, I expected 'em to be good. Oh here's one that was a surprise: Total Recall. Posts: 0 02/12/02 22:34	this is true. i actually really enjoyed eraser for some strange reason... romantic comedies can be good. i didn't intend to mean that they weren't. for me, they're just not big screen movies. but i do like some of them! egads! yes! i do watch romantic comedies! i just can't take when they're billed as that, yet are almost completely lacking in the comedy area. oh yeah, and a movie that wasn't as good as i thought it was: gosford park. i enjoyed it, but it wasn't what i thought it was gonna be. =\ has anyone else seen it? I'm not a baseball fan and not a baseball movie fan (although there is something to be said for a late screening of The Natural with a gaggle of very silly and slighly tipsy girlfriends) - oh and not a Kevin Cosner fan. I mean I had heard the good reviews, I generally love any Will Smith movie, and I love to olf but all the previews just turned me off and what I heard didn't help. Then it came on cable the other night and I watched it. All I can say is wow. This is quite possibly one of the best films I've seen this year. Will Smith really impressed me as did Charlize Thewrone the rest were average at best but the script and those two made this movie truly amazing for me.

The "prayers" at the end were great too. Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things. This was not one of them. But this moment, I plan to live this well. Posts: 0 03/02/02 22:03	You know what was suprisingly bad? I was expecting to like Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back as well as Dogma. But I dunno... It just wasn't as good as I expected them to be. Somewhat disappointed. Though I must admit I enjoyed watching them to a degree. Shrug. I guess I just had a high expectation for them and they fell short somewhat.
