Okay mine isn't all that small, but I still gotta
do a public dance of joy: I've gotten promoted! Yippee!
As of Sunday (beginning of a pay-week) I'll be a new
co-manager at the Books-A-Million where I'm currently the
Key 6 (impulse buy crap) specialist. It's more
responsibilities, but I'm pretty sure I can handle 'em,
plus it's a pay bump. yahooee!

As I promised, there are also a few good
things:
- my parents aren't angry with me because of my results - our movie-collection got a recent enlargement: Geronimo, American Graffiti, Gosford Park, The Mummy, Shakespeare in Love, Soldier Blue, The Dirty Dozen, Battle of the Bulge, Where Eagles Dare, The Big Red One and Battleground - through my connections I managed to order a laptop of great quality for 2/3 of the original price - my internet works again Eendracht maakt

I heard somewhere, I think it was a sitcom, that in
a poll where people listed their greatest fears, the #1
was Public Speaking, and #2 was death. At any given
funeral, your average guy would rather be the one in the
box than the one doing the eulogy.
In my faith, it is custom to have not a Pastor or a Priest, but to have several of the brothers in the congregation, most of them in fact, to take turns personally preparing and giving talks/speeches/sermons about bible passages/principles/lessons in front of everyone. I have been in this group since I was nine years old. I get an assigned subject every few months. They start you out easy, reading this passage or verse, then work you up to the trickier or more nuanced stuff as you gain experience. Tonight was my turn. It was a subject I knew, but it was a tricky angle on it, it was 15 minutes long, it was in front of 104 people that I respect and admire, including pretty much all my friends and all my family. I nailed it. Nailed it good. I barely used my notes, by the end I ignored them completely, and just spoke from what I knew. I nailed it. When I was done, people were applauding. I have been on a high for the last four hours. The stage is a holy place. It's a place of entertainment, of education, of authority, of attention, and (in a religious setting,) a place of worship. And I take my worship seriously. When you're on stage you have their attention for two minutes. After those first two minutes it's all up to you. The point of giving a speech is not to look good or to be entertaining, although those things certainly help. The point is to make them remember, and maybe its in the subject you have, or maybe it's in the illustrations or metaphors, or maybe it's just the words you choose to emphasise or repeat, but the point of it is to get the message in. Not out. Not to get the words out there, but to get them in. Into them. Seize the subject and the words will follow. Every time I have to give one of these talks, or for that matter, every time I'm required to speak to people about anything I care about, I make this request in prayer. "Let me do my subject matter justice." Tonight that prayer was answered for me and then some. I've never had a night like this. I did better than I've ever done before tonight. And 104 people saw me do it. This was a good night. |

That is excellent! There's nothing like the high of
a good performance, unless it's the high of a good
performance that got the message across. *high fives*

Whoo! I've booked a ticket to go see my soccer
team, Tottenham Hotspur, take on my home team Reading FC
at Reading's stadium! WHOOOOOO!!! And I've even snagged a
seat in the Spurs end! And we've bought Edgar Davids, one
of the greatest players ever, and if he plays tomorrow I
will actually weep with joy!

Well, the obnoxious citizen committee that I've
been providing weekly support for at work every Wednesday
night has decided to try to "speed things
up" so they can finish the goals that were set
out for them by the Board of Supervisors. Thankfully, we
managed to dodge the Saturday bullet that the Committee
Chair had been repeatedly threatening us with, but it was
decided over the last few meetings to add meetings on
Tuesday nights (in addition
to the Wednesday
Night ones) through August and September. It was all kind
of up in the air until yesterday when the Chairman
proclaimed that yes, we would be meeting this Tuesday
(today). The conference room was booked and I was gearing
myself up for adding yet another cluster-fuck day to my
schedule...
Then I got a call from one of the other staff members who's been working with this committee. Apparently, because the committee's meetings are supposed to be open to the public, the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) requires that all of the meetings be placed on the County Calendar at least 5 days before the event. Since today's meeting went up on the calendar yesterday, we're not allowed to have the meeting today. I love FOIA. |

I got to spend some really good quality time with a
guyfriend and we talked about so many things.
And while it didn't end as well I would have *hoped, it was a great experience. *happy sigh* (I have been feeling kinda nauseaus for the past week, and I had to make him leave because I was about to hurl...um, was hurling as he left... That is *such* a great feeling! I know it exactly.
To illuminate: A while back, I had just walked in to
work, had yet to even take my bag to the back/get my
apron on when an older lady asked about books about
breeding poodles (hers was pregnant). She didn't have her
reading glasses with her and needed someone to literally
help her read the books to know if they were what she
wanted. We had a nice chat, found her a few books and I
advised her to check with the AKC (American Kennel Club)
about registering her bitch's puppies, and also to check
with them how to determine (as puppies when registering)
whether they'd be teacup or toy. (Size determines, so how
would you know until they're grown?)
She goes to the front & I go on to the back to put away my lunch and get my apron on. Turns out she was raving about how helpful I was to my manager. Heh. And here I just thought we'd had a nice chat. So yeah, I SO know the feeling. Good luck on the X-mas hire & the subsequent spending money! I know fuck is a bad word, but
you're fucking making me say it!

Re: Once more from the top... | #14 | ||

As it turns out, my schedule is behaving! Woot! And
I have more time than I had previously thought!
So as it is, all of my classes are on mondays and wednesdays (leaving the rest of the days free for crazy work hours) and on wednesdays, until october 17th, I have this ginormous gap of time between noon and 6pm. (More time to work!) And to make things even better, because the photo buildings are being torn down and rebuilt, they made the semester for those classes 3/4 of the usual semester. So after mid november, I am completely free before 3pm! (Even MORE time!) And I really want to work as many hours as possible. So this is good. Very good. And I even have all easy classes (well, political science has the potential to be hard, but from what I've heard, it's all multiple choice tests and reading, which for me usually translates into easy). Yes! For once life is being NICE to me! _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I'm hoping today will behave, really. |

Have you ever had one of those days when you look
in the mirror and are satisfied? I'm having one today.
I've lost about 16 pounds (or 8 kilos) and I've been
visiting a gym regulary for more than 1.5 year. I guess
it might seem silly and narcistic, but it does feel
good.

Damn, I enjoyed that!
So there is this hole, ripped plastic actually, in an arched window on my balcony. The new guy on the condo board (We'll call him Chicken Little) seems to have taken it into his head to make this a cause celebre, bugging my landlord to do something -I told him I'd been in touch with said landlord (there were other repairs that were a higher priority that have all been attended to, and I'm very sympathetic about it), but they have to write anyway and since he doesn't reply back (these guys have this ridiculous notion that everybody quakes in fear of their imaginary authority) Chicken Little calls to say their handyman and the association president are coming IN AN HOUR - now it's Monday, it's a work day, I work here, and I don't appreciate not getting more than an hour's notice for that kind of thing. But I say fine. They get here asking if I have a criter out there now now - I say no (there has been ONE BAT remember, in a year, 1 single bat, now deceased). They look at the hole, we establish that it is not wild kingdom out there. "I've seen birds flying in there" Chicken Little says. "Well I haven't," I told them. One bat, it flew in, and after a few days it died. So, while it needs to be fixed, sure, "this obviously isn't the emergency situation we were told," says condo president. "No," I smile sweetly. So condo president, handyman, and chicken little are gone and I can get back to work. Hope Chicken Little is sufficiently embarrassed that he steers clear of me for a while. I despise that kind of hysterical little self-important dipshit, and I haven't gotten to sharpen my claws in quite some time. |

It definitely qualifies as small, but it's still a
victory - through careful use of 40 hours of vacation,
after I put 12 in tomorrow I'll be a free man for the
next 13 days.
My messed-up rotation schedule is finally working for me for once! |
